Can Christians be educated without becoming atheists?

Look at Galileo Galilee. He was a Catholic, yet he paved the way for modern science with his experiments, observations, analyzing, and thinking on Gravity and space. Gregor Mendel was Catholic monk for the rest of his life, yet he paved the way for Genetics and Biology.

Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. He and the other Founding Fathers were Protestant Christian until they died, yet they were responsible for our independence, government formation, and basic civil rights. Benjamin Franklin made important discoveries on electricity, and Thomas Edison actually came up with a way to use electricity: by a light bulb. The printing press was invented entirely by Christians. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and replaceable parts. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister in a church, yet he was responsible for the first equal rights movement for minorities in the 20th century. Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Dwight Eisenhower were responsible for Hitler's defeat in World War II.

Every single one of those people had an education. They all were Christians and never became atheists. What's your definition of education? Learning only one side of everything? That's what it sounds like whenever I here atheists talking about "proper education". I tell you, you can be educated without becoming an atheist.

Absolutely! Speciation does not occur. There are tens of thousands of millions of years old fossils of animals that are alive and walking the earth today. Do research and stop learning only what they want you to learn. Evolution is dead!

You named a lot of deists and pretended they are/were christians... that aside, there is a difference between education and indoctrination... many well educated minds have held superstition. Socrates was no atheist, nor was Plato, great thinkers... Isaac Newton was a religious fanatic, he spent more time on Alchemy and religion than he did on advanced mathematics (our loss).

I am convinced that we could one day encounter inteligent being in space, and they could be silicon based octopoids with IQs in the billionsand they would still have supersitios amongtheir ranks..

Being educated does not lead to atheism... being taught to think critically, and THEN examining the evidense for the existence of God does.

Agreed.

Our current Pope is an amazing theologian, and has a doctorate. He was a professor before he was a Bishop.

I think *some* atheists have concluded they can't posses knowledge along side belief. However the two are not mutually exclusive. Have you considered some atheists were raised in fundamentalist homes that deny science and history? So in their experience, the two are mutually exclusive. They turned their backs on any possibility of faith because their gained knowledge has deluded the faith they were raised in. Please see emphasis on "some atheists" -- not all. That would be unacceptable generalization.

I think St. Augustine said it best:

"Intelligence led me away from God, but wisdom brought me back to him."

Education is the leading cause of atheism.

Intellectual honesty is the specific mechanism.

Edit: King was NOT the first person responsible for equal rights for minorities in the 20th century. That would be the women's right to vote.

Watch out for "all good Scotsmen" argument, or should I say "logical fallacy" like the first poster who said basically, "people who believe in evolution are not real christians" -- that's the definition of "all good Scotsmen" argument in a nutshell.

Both sides could incorrectly invoke that argument to side step your evidence.

Anyways.. I'll give ya 1 more to add to the pile that you have already...

Georges LeMaitre -- Catholic Priest and Physicist who is credited as FIRST to propose the Big Bang theory, after reviewing Hubble's red shift theory. Hoyle later coined the term "the big bang" but it was a Catholic Priest who first proposed the idea.

The Catholic church also has some of the most prestigious Colleges and Universities in the world. They also operate over 580 hospitals in the US alone, treating roughly 1 in every 5 patients in the US.

Now I'm not saying all Hospital Employees, and every one attending a Catholic University is Christian, mind ya, but I'm just painting a picture that Atheists don't have a monopoly on the intelligence market..that's all.

Nuff said!

God Bless

1. yes
2. education is simply to be taught, it could be referred to in a number ways
3. I agree, and if you go into something with a biast mind about it not wanting to learn it you will not understand, simply because you do not want to.
I want to learn more about both sides of the story and even why atheists believe what they believe I do not however want to read books arrogantly bashing my faith in my God because the author had some sort of grudge.
It is possible to be an educated Christian.

By the way, I liked your examples, they're handy.
