Can a train slide on Ice?

the flanges on the wheels are too narrow, they would cut into the ice like a knifeblade, even if the ice were thick enough to support the weight, all movement would stop in a short distance.
 
Like in the Polar Express, is there a possibility that steam locomotives, or any type of engine for that matter would be able to pull a train and slide on ice that might be frozen enough?
