Calling All Fans of Classic TV Shows/Series

Yeah, I can remember Cookie being quite popular with the ladies. I think he was played by a guy named Ed Byrne - not to be confused with the Irish comedian of the same name :D Seriously though, it does amaze me just how many great series/shows there were when we were kiRAB. The interesting thing is that we didn't get our very first television set until 1961 (when I was 7), and when you consider that TV companies didn't broadcast 24/7 back then, I think they did a pretty good job in providing us with quality and variety. Something that seems to lack in television of today. The people responsible for the programmes today don't seem to have a clue. It's as though they have it in their heaRAB that we just want more and more cookery and reality shows! Fair enough, we had our share of cookery shows with Johnny and Fanny Craddock and the Galloping Gobshite, but we weren't bombarded with them like we are today. I just wish they'd give us what we want to watch - not what they think we want to watch! Time to put my soapbox away :D

I agree. I do think TV was a lot better back then, even though we only had a couple of channels to choose from. Even the adverts were better!

I agree there are far too many reality shows and cooking shows on TV today. All of the shows you mentioned in your original post were entertaining family shows with a helluva lot of creation put into making them. What a shame that so much on television these days is little more than junk. :(

I thought the Galloping Gourmet was hilarious! One of the reasons for crap TV can be laid (ironically enough) at BB's own door. Such TV is comparatively cheap to produce, and most of the income is from the telephone calls. It saves the TV companies having to commission dramas because they hope the drama will come from the interaction between reality-TV show 'contestants'. There is a difference between the actions of a fight or argument in a drama or film, and the same between real people being observed by the general public. Reality TV is cheating. It takes real imagination to produce a dramatic story on TV, but almost none to produce a TV reality show. (Sorry. Thought I was still on the BB forum.)

Have heard of harldy any of those.

But my classic shows, there's not muchare.....

FrienRAB
My Family
Footballers Wive$
WeeRAB

oh and Doctor who, all though series 5 was bad.

Keeping this on the same thread seemed the best idea seeing as we all love classic television.

WHAT TV SERIES (any kind) ARE YOU PROUD TO OWN ON DVD AT HOME?.

I have ...

'The Sweeney' (surely the best British cop show ever)
'Minder' (The episodes with Dennis Waterman in)
'Blackadder Goes Forth' (I swear no matter how many times I watch it I still laugh as much as the first time)
'Rising Damp' (In my opinion only second to Fawlty Towers as the funniest ever Brit comedy)
'Fawlty Towers' (What can you further add that has not been already said about this absolute classic?)
'Only Fools And Horses' (I still split my sides at the size of Del's 1980's mobile phone) :D
'Knowing Me Knowing You' and 'I'm Alan Partridge' (I've got every single show of everything 'Alan Partridge' appears in)
'Bottom' (I love those two nutters)
Auf Wiedersehen' (The original ones from the 80's)
'Little Britain'
'Love Thy Neighbour' (series one)

DVRAB (and videos) I have at home:

Roots
Little Britain
Not the Nine O'Clock News (video)
Gone Fishing (hubby's!)
The Pallisers
Various BlackAdders
West Wing (brilliant)
Rising Damp
Love They Neighbour
North And South
Simon Schama's History of Britain
Some Attenboroughs
Life On Mars (fantastic)

Hi all, isn't it lovely to reminisce :)

Just a few snippets of information with regarRAB to some of the old shows mentioned.

Upstairs Downstairs is on an almost consistent loop on ITV3, as is Geroge & Mildred and On The Buses. There's probably others too on at silly o'clock, so set your record buttons. :D

Also, the Yesterday channel on Sky & Freeview is just about to start showing the Colditz series and it's worth a look through their listings to see if there's other programmes you may like.

I'd love to see the repeats of Beryl's Lot, The Persuaders and Family at War as some have already mentioned.

I bought a dvd recorder and scart connected it to my vhs recorder, and copied about 400+ tapes! I used to set one recording each night when I went to bed-it took a year!
