I had a new socket installed for the new digital aerial we had installed on our building this morning. I connected it up as I had previously (1 socket for the TV and one for the radio). It worked fine so I signed off on the job. However after watching TV for a bit (and using the stereo, which was unplugged at the time) I've noticed a buzzing sound (most likely some kind of interference, possibly the signal is too strong).

I've read about Attenuators and the like but just wondered if there was a simple fix. Its similar to the sound Record players make when they're not grounded.

BTW I'll be calling the installation engineers to get the problem rectified if I can't fix it myself and for the time being I can continue to use the old aerial.

Cheers

The most common reason is an audio jack in the wrong port such as a video out.

If not...

You mat have a grounding issue. Eliminate things step by step.

Plug in a different radio.
Still buzzing?

It may not even be the radio causing the issue. If you have multiple devices plugged into a power strip then unplug one at a time to see if the buzz goes away.

I know they do make transisors for this as well, but it is nice to know what exactly causes the issue.

I am a broadband tech and run into this problem frequently. Mostly on older homes that are not grounded so well and since our cable is grounded. A small amount of current jumps on to it. Seen this problem many times.

I have heard once of a customer that had poor grounding at their home becasue of rocky soil. They took a hose and wet the soil around the ground rod which would make the buzzing go away for quite a while until the ground dried up again.
