Bangel really is pure love. Angel never took advantage of Buffy or tried to force her to love him. He was content with just being able to be around her and help her. His love for her was enough of a reason to be happy. Buffy loved Angel with all of her heart. She was not closed off or afraid to love. She let herself be emotionally vulnerable with him. She put herself out there even if it meant she might get hurt.
I love that Buffy met him before he was widely known for being a "Champion" or a "good guy". In LTM when she said "I love you but I'm not sure if I trust you" it was because she really was seeing Angel pre-heroic deeRAB. There really was nothing before she met him to warrant trust. It was being together and surviving so much that lead to her trusting him. She was with him when he was first starting out on his journey of helping people and defeating evil. She was the reason that he started that journey.
I started to write my B/A paragraph and started writing this. I stopped when I realized that it hadn't even gotten to their first kiss yet and needed to be shortened. lol
Liam was an aimless, womanizing, lazy but ultimately harmless drunkard wasting his potential in life until one night in an Irish alleyway he was turned into the soulless demon Angelus by the prostitute turned vampire Darla. For over a century he callously tortured, raped, and murdered scores of helpless humans. He gained confidence in his abilities and had purpose for the first time but he twisted his former desires into cruel ways to hurt people. Cursed by the Romani Gypsies for killing one of their beloved daughters, he was given back his human soul which left him alone and crippled with shame and remorse for 98 years. Once again he chose to waste his potential, only this time it was out of guilt instead of boredom and lust. That all changed in a New York City alleyway the night that he met another immortal demon (this time sent by the Powers That Be) named Whistler.
Together they traveled to Los Angeles for Angel to witness a fifteen year old girl named Buffy Anne Summers be informed by a meraber of the Watchers Council that she is the Slayer, destined to corabat the forces of evil alone and outnurabered until her death. In one day he saw her go from being bathed in sunlight as she walked out of school happy and carefree and oblivious to the horrors in the world to realizing that she has the weight of the world on her shoulders and staking her first vampire and then sobbing in her bathroom as her parents fought over her. While Angelus would want to defile everything that was good about her and revel in her misery and welcome her indoctrination into demonology and death all Angel wanted was to help her. All he had known for two centuries was sin and destruction and he was moved by her inner light and purity and innocence. He had witnessed firsthand what the blooRABhed and violence could do to the spirit and it made him want to become a person again, join the fight against evil, in order to protect her heart and take away some of her burden and ensure that she didn’t ever lose her goodness or her life to battling demons. It was through helping her and selflessly loving her that Angel started to chance upon salvation.
For the first year he gained his strength back, watching out for her in the shadows but making sure to never interfere with her life. That changed when her Watcher Merrick was killed and she moved to the demon-infested Sunnydale, Boca del Inferno (the Mouth of Hell). He decided that the best way to help her was to finally introduce himself and he quickly became a trusted ally. He tried to keep his distance for months, staying on the demon grapevine to give her any information he could to make her job any easier despite knowing that she wanted more from him.
