Brokeback Mountain

I love this film but I see yet again that the old Crash v BBM debate is back!

Personally I found Crash to be incredibly derivative and had absolutely nothing new to say - even the intertwining of the stories has been done before and done better. Still the academy love a film about race and LA.

I actually think that three of the other four nominees in the best pitcure category deserved to win more than Crash (Goodnight and Good Luck, BBM and Capote) and only Munich was less deserving.

There is a scene towarRAB the end where Heath is talking to his daughter. That scene kills me every time.

I went to see that film on opening night and there was not a dry eye in the place when we left. Of course it was all a bunch of gay men.

I don't understand how anyone can claim this film is boring, it speaks highly of peoples now desperately short attention spans. The film did not win so many awarRAB, three is hardly sweeping the board!

I thought it was a lovely film - at least it didnt stereotype all gay men as bitchy drama queens, like Hollywood usually do.

Jake Gyllenhall is one of my favourite actors, such a shame the brilliant Heath Ledger will never be able to make any more great films like this ever again, he was far too young to die.

I had to laugh though, at the end when Ennis' daughter told him she was getting married, the actress who played her wasnt even that much younger than Heath.

My understanding on this was that he meant, "Jack Twist, look what you do to me".

This is one of my favourite, if not my favourite film of all time. The first time I saw it, my male homophobic friend was with me so it was very much ruined for me by his agonizing embarrassment (my fault for dragging him along.)

Watched it on Sunday and was really able to appreciate it. I am a sucker for romance stories (not crappy ones, ones with a proper story) and ironically this is the most romantic and heart rendering of any I have ever seen.

I'm still feeling the after affects from Sunday!

It was superbly acted by all involved. The cinematography was outstanding. Yes, Heath mumbled quite a bit and it was sometimes frustrating not to hear every word - although it to me did represent his inner turmoil and intense fear of expressing his real self.

I loved one of the early scenes when the two of them are waiting outside that trailer never having met before and just saying nothing for what must have been minutes.

Will buy this on DVD. Best love story I've been told.

Now I LOVED "Crash" and personally I think it did deserve it's Oscar. The only other reaseon I've seen people use to say why it "didn't deserve it" is because it should've been "Brokeback Mountain".

Now last night was the first time I've ever seen "Brokeback Mountain" and although I do think it was a pretty decent Film, I'm really sorry to say that I don't think it does deserve the Oscar, it just didn't capture me the same way "Crash" did.

On the positive side I think it goes without saying that this was a very, VERY brave Film to make. Yes we've had "The love that can never be" stories before but never looking at the gay side before. So kudos to all those who made this, espcially the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Each of them played they're respective parts well, Heath as Ennis who was more shut up/quiet and in denial while Jake as Jack who was more accepting and honest then Ennis was so credit where it's due here.

I also like the fact that it was done slowly, not randomly "OMGZ we wub eachother" straight away (thank God, I hate Films like that:rolleyes:) which was what I was worried was going to happen.
And Ennis' wife finding out and not knowing what to do was well done too.
So on the emotional side of things they were well done.

Now on to the negative side. Some parts I felt dragged a little bit too long than it should've been which kind of made the Film a quite boring for me and to be completly honest I'm not really into "Sex Scenes" in Films. That's not to say I wasn't expecting that to happen, I'd have to be pretty dumb if I DIDN'T expect that given what the Film is about but still I just don't like it when Films have "Sex Scenes", it kind of ruins it for me. There was also a "Sex Scene" in "Crash" and again I just hated that part; IMO there was just really no need for that. I just don't like blatant things like that, I'm more of a subtle person myself and prefer the "Subtle Romance" in Films but then that's just me, you guys may disagree with me on this part which is fair enough.

I also don't like the how Ennis took his anger out on his Ex-Wife. Yes I'm sure it was very hard on him given the time period but I can understand why his Ex was p*ssed at him. Gay or Straight the point is he still cheated on her, of course she's going to be upset. I hate to say this but I lost some sympathy with Ennis on that part.

Also loaRAB of people found the part where Jack died upsetting. To be honest I thought that part was too rushed and random. How did his killers know he was Gay? Were there Deleted Scenes I've missed? Personally I would've preferd a slow build up to that part during the Film. Not blatant "OMGZ you're a P**f! Lets kill you!" but again subtle. One of the men finRAB out, tells his mates and slowly, slowly they do small things to Jack like give him a dirty looks, shove past him, delibrately spills a drink on him and THEN kills him. Then to me it wouldn't be random, we would've of seen it coming but again happening slowly. Again you guys will probably disagree with me on this part.

So all in all, quite a decent Film for me but quite boring in certain Parts for me too. I'd probably watch it again if it came on TV but I certainly wouldn't rush to the shops to buy it on DVD. I give it 5/10.

If you guys disagree with me on this fair enough but this just honestly how I felt about "Brokeback Mountain":).

Crash is amazing aswell...I would be hard pushed to choose out of the two of them. I have both at home and after reading this thread I think I am going to watch Brokeback Mountain tonight :)

The only part of the movie I don't like is the scene of the dead sheep :(

About the last scene...

Ennis has Jack's clothes hanging on his wardrobe door, and he looks at it and then at a photo of Brokeback Mountain and says "Jack, I swear", not quite sure exactly what that meant but it's a beautiful scene

I also love the music in the movie. The score is absolutely beautiful.

I agree. I thought the film was very well made - the best i've seen in years. Very emotional too.

The soundtrack is on iTunes if anyone's interested:

In Jack's bedroom his shirt was on top of Ennis's - Ennis reverses them, I always took it as Jack's way of 'holding' Ennis the only way he could at the time, and then Ennis repeated the gesture with him 'holding' Jack the only way left to him.

I think I was lucky as the short story was a favourite of mine, and the screenwriters used so much of the dialogue from it I didn't have a problem understanding Ennis at all.

:)i understood this scene as: jack was actually murdered, however it is left for you to decide if his wife is covering this up to save the family shame, or maybe that's what her overprotective father has told her and she believes it herself?
maybe her father was involved? as he always hated jack

i love this film, very moving. it is slow moving, but it's something completely different.

It really didn't do anything for me last time I saw it, it's well shot yes but apart from that I didn't see what all the fuss was about frankly. Wouldn't watch it again.
