Enlighten me Many of you are telling us [Americans] that we could have never won our independence without the aid of France
As we see it we had to go to war,for many reasons, not the least being your taxation,we felt it was excessive and protested You sent a large military force to intimidate us and killed a few yanks for having the audacity to stand in front of your troops,on their return to Boston we killed over 300 and the war was on
Towards the end of our war the French sent aid and some military To this day we are told over and over, that without this aid we would have never win
Now to my question We are told incessantly that we were late for-fulling our duty to you coming to your aid in WW 2 and you really didn't need us as you were winning anyway
As you know we yanks feel we win the war in the pacific and were the driving force to victory in Europe
Please enlighten me with your wisdom

Please try and stay on point You can call us names later But how is it the French come late to our aid and won the war for us But we came to your aid late, but it had no effect on the outcome?
Sidney On your many trips to the U S I'm sure you have noted there is always one or two man standing by the front door of all our churchs
NEVER AGAIN
Alter ego Great ans with the exception of ''sneak attack'' today surpise attack Try and stay with the program
New LaboUr voter
''after the war protecting'' ...from what I heard on your BBC that your military were protecting the American Indian from the yanks and we simply did not want to pay for it
celt for the 150 years you ruled this part of the world many observed the difference between our two people Most felt we were little more than savages to them we were a weak and backward people

I think that the British were doing very well winning the war in Europe. I think America joined in because they were seeing their nuclear bases could be placed in Europe if they helped. Cynical, maybe.

Hey little dude, chillax!!!!!!! We are friends with you lot aren't we?
I think you've probably been watching too much TV.
I mean, what, american independence what 240 years ago or something like that? Why do you think we care about it?
We have many other achievements to grace ourselves with since then.
Visit Trafalgar square, London, that'll tell you all about it :)
Remember, we Brits are your closest allies in this scary world.
:)

I could type out a whole history lesson for you Ray, but it would be fairly pointless considering that it would only feed your inferiority complex and besides which, the introduction of a few things like "historical facts" wouldn't change what you desperately want to believe.

I will simply say that the most important battles to take place during the American Independence were not even on American soil and involved the British fighting the French and Spanish armies plus the Dutch navy. Not a colonial rebel involved.
As regards the French entering "towards the end of [y]our war" I hardly think that 1777 is toward the end - in fact they'd been sending aid for almost a year before militarily involving themselves.

The US entrance into WWII did indeed speed up the eventual victory (the invasion and liberation of the European mainland would have taken at least another year for example), but it was by no means the "driving force" or catalyst for the Nazi regime to collapse; and without the efforts of the British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian and Chinese forces on mainland Asia, the US wouldn't have had nearly as quite as much success in the Pacific as you would like to think.

So all in all, up until the entry of the French the colonists were consistantly losing the conflict in battle after battle (with the exception of Saratoga of course) whereas by 1941 the Wermacht and Luftwaffe had been brought to a halt and their only option was to turn on Russia - making the same mistake Napoleon did 129 years earlier.
But you won't accept any of this, eh?

Taxation, the taxpayer in Britain paid higher tax than those in the US colonies.

The defence of the US colonies was an economic strain on Britain.

"The cost of fielding the army that secured the safety of the English colonies was tremendous. This expense, together with the continuing cost of protecting these colonies after the war, led to English demands that the American colonists contribute to the cost of their own protection"

The French " in total naval and military participants the French outnumbered the Americans between three and four to one. Yorktown was Rochambeau’s victory."

"French military aid was also a decisive factor in the American victory"

Edit sorry Ray you ask for education and then refuse it.

There are very few people who were actually there. The ones that were there - including some of my family lines - really wouldn't give a crap about who was responsible for 'victory' in Europe, if you could ever call it that.

Where the death of millions of people are involved, I think victory is perhaps not the best word.

And to be honest, I always though that Russia turned the tides of WW2... If you want to pick on a country over their actions in the war, maybe start with Germany...

"Educate this yank" - Ray, you and I know this is impossible!

"It is always shocking to hear an Englishman point out our history"

Well Ray, someone`s got to do it seeing as you won`t.

whether the Americans I wont call them yanks as yanks come from the south and the americans in WW2 came from both north and south were in the war and whether they came into the war to late is also irrelevant the fact to remember is that they did come into the war and many of them died far from home and on our side surely that is the biggest thing to remember people will always turn history to suit themselves no matter what actually happened
