This just in from ESPN.com - Freddie Patek, former MLB player, has just been named in the Mitchell Report. Investigators were suspicious of Patek's sudden jump from 1 home run in 1979 to an unheard of total of 5 in 1980. That and the fact that Patek ballooned from 148 lbs. in 1979 to a scale tipping 153 lbs. when he reported to spring training in 1980 led to his questioning, as well as his agreeing to be part of the steroid testing that baseball conducted in 2003, despite the fact that he retired following the 1981 season.
Do you think this will keep Patek from the Hall of Fame? Should his home run total of 41 over his amazing 14 year career have an asterisk next to it? And who do you think should be my hero now? My world is shattered at this devastating news. I guess it doesn't pay to have heroes.
Ja77 - I don't know. A guy hits a mess of dingers the first year of testing, then none the next year? Sounds a bit suspicious to me. Sounds like he was coming off the roids, but it took a year for it to really effect him.
