Bouquet of Barbed Wire ITV 1

I think that type of middle class woman wouldn't have had her child so early .
Amanda Redman would have been a better casting choice!

Are you serious? They aren't having an incestuous relationship but incest is a reality and books , plays and films have always tackled such an issue.
You can always watch something else if you find this programme distasteful!

Saw Ep 2 -- they seem to be in a competition to see who can go superfast through scene after scene without making much sense..
It is astounding that decent actors are actually involved in such toss..
It has none of the substance of the original and appears to be edited by someone from MTV..
i love it though,,even if only for laughs

I thought it was pretty good - am a bit biased as I think Trev is a bit of a God - but overall come on - for an ITV drama it was pretty good - 5.2M viewers can't be wrong.

Well that wasn't far fetched at all was it - that you could get up to jiggy jigs in your hospital bed 5 mins after being stabbed in the back - quite literally!

well I was 8 so didn't really understand the subtext at all but I saw it repeated in the mid late eighties and really enjoyed it. :D I have it downloaded from a few years back and the only thing that slightly jars is the very seventies sets and clothes, and camera techniques.

There's no incest. What there is is that special, compelling relationship which happens between some fathers and daughters, where daughters love their daddies to bits and dads are quite possessive over daughters, ie no-one is good enough for them.

I am quite enjoying the drama. I remember the original Bouquet very well. This one is a bit different in that Gavin is not so nice and there is some connection between him and Peter (Paula), and the relationship between he and mum has started before Prue has her baby. Other than that, it is much the same. I didn't expect it to be exactly the same. It doesn't have the same impact on me as the original but I wouldn't expect that, I am much older now and less shocks/disturbs me. When I watched it way back in 1976 I was more fascinated by the relationship between Peter and his secretary than anything else.

Trevor Eve's crying scene in the car was the worst bit of acting ever! His weird contorted face reminded me of the scene in The Thing, when the crew are all tied to chairs and one of them starts mutating!

That was really, really awful drama. Unconvincing writing, hammy acting, not one single character the viewer could care about or like, and half the time I couldn't understand a word they were saying, especially Gavin. Terrible!

Sadly I was completely unable to watch this due to the cringe-inducing acting and horribly stilted dialogue.

Happily, you lovely people have learned me that this was simply a poor remake of an excellent original so I shall watch that instead. Very merry thank yous!

Not everything. There are some good dramas around on tv over the past few years. I can think of 2 examples, The Silence and Blood And Oil both on BBC, this year, which were both rather good. I'd probably agree with what you say about the majority of tv dramas, but it's too soon yet to write off this version of BoBW. Most American tv drama series are appalling. We only get to see the good or so-so stuff here which is a small percentage of the whole.

Same here. I have never seen the original nor read the book so didn't know what to expect. What I found was a reasonably interesting storyline spoilt by the need to rush. I have no feelings for any of the actors/actresses because we have been given no time to get to know them. It all seems so clumsy.

And as for the 'actress' that plays Pru, she is terrible. She has an inability to stop moving her lips even when she's not speaking and is so wooden.

I will watch it next week because I'm keen to know the storyline but the acting is rubbish.

im still trying to digest what i saw last night, why didnt the pilot of the balloon do anything when Peter climbed upwards had Peter knocked him out? Trevor Eve goes on about how the bbc puts too much money into certain programmes but at least the beeb didnt make this crap

I never saw the original, so this was all new to me.

I enjoyed it, but as others have pointed out - it never really explained anything.

I have to admit that reading this thread has made me want to watch the original show. I must try and find it on Amazon.

I'm sort of guessing the ending now.

Blimey what a poor 2nd episode, the only sympathetic character for me now is Sarah . The rest can go to Hell or Yorkshire in a mini driven by Prue.

I'm thoroughly sick of know it all anti - hero Gavin and his super powers. He's able to magically materialise on peoples lawns at dawn and survive knife attacks so well the next day he gives wood to his mother in law !
He must get a nomination for this years ITV baddie in a soap or mini series.

That was what made the original so compelling. The characters were complex and felt real. Imagine if it were remade in America? Everything would be spelled out for you so you wouldn't have to think.

I have no problem with the BOBW being updated/slightly altered - it's inevitable. But this production has been changed to the extent that it is no longer BOBW. And although they have introduced 'big shock' moments like Gavin's stabbing, the characters and storyline have all been watered down. When an original story is so good, why change it? And if you do want to change it to that extent, just write a new drama!

I usually like Jemima Rooper but IMO she is all wrong for Sarah, who has been very poorly developed. But in general I think the actors are doing the best they can with a very unlikely script.

I am looking forward to the arrival of my pre-ordered original series on DVD .:)

Lol. The mother said that the boyfriend reminds her of Peter and so he should be less hard on the boyfriend. It's also the idea that she'd go for a guy that reminds her of her father.

Well said.

The original was far more character based, and with 7 episodes, had more time to tell the story. Susan Penhaligon's Prue was nasty, vindictive and spoilt - a real Daddy's girl in all the wrong ways.

This is rushed and badly acted.
