Bouquet of Barbed Wire ITV 1

I was disappointed too. I remember feeling an overwelming sense of menace when watching the original. There was a subtext that overlay everything. Last nights version was a bit bland. I do think it was the script mainly.

The mistake was billing this as a remake of BOBW,,it's not.
Anyone who remembers the original will be disappointed. That contained a detailed character study of the the four main participants. This has been pared down from it's original 7 episodes to only 3..you can't lose 4 episodes and still show the the depth of character that was so important to the original.
I can still watch this and forget the original, but some things continue to annoy me. For example, I don't see why the Gavin character was changed. In the original, he appeared older, he had a certain charm, and was Peter's intellectual equal. In this he behaves like a petulant child, but still somehow has powers of seduction that are beyond comprehension.
They also seem largely to have abondoned the sado-masochistic angle, there have been a couple of references from Gavin saying Prue had "wanted It"..but it was important to the original plot, Pru was no innocent in the first series !
Of course, there is one more episode for them to explore the relationships further, and perhaps explain the strange attractions and the motives behind their actions.

I don't think so - it looks to me that Trevor feels the need to have sex with this girl as a surrogate for doing it with his daughter.

I got the box set out of curiousity more than anything else (I wasn't even born when it was first broascast)

Very ground breaking series and yes, you can see that it was ahead of its time. Very daring series for 1976.

As far as the remake goes, I'll watch and hope that ITV can relive some of its old magic. Hoping for best, but fearing the worst.

I give up on British drama, I really do. What a load oh hurried rubbish. Everything is so low budget and contrived looking or poorly acted.

Think I'll stick with American dramas. The only thing we can do is satire and reality tv and even that's debatable.

I don't think this version was dark enough. Clearly they decided to concentrate on Peter's snobbery (it'd be interesting if he fancied Gavin, lol). Fun but not electric.

seemed ok but i hate these things dragging on for 3 weeks.
They could cut half the adverts and make this a 2 hour 15 minute programme
or at least do 2 90 mins over two nights.

I liked it but the dad is wierd. That screen saver of his daughter is freaky.
The daughter annoyed the f*** out of me !

go out and get some fresh air. Tune into the many other channels you have, go up the pub, meet a friend or do anything you want to but dont moan about something you have NOT seen.

I cant stand people who moan about programmes on TV - if you dont like it turn it over or off. simple as that.

Glad it's not just me. :D I saw all the negative comments on here and I was wondering if I was watching the same programme as everybody else. I think it's really gripping, I can't wait for the next episode.

Thanks for checking that out lizzie. :) Seems daft they've made so many changes but kept the title. Perhaps it should say " Very loosely based on " before the title! :D

You're probably right there. We only found out the truth about the Paula cr*p in the last 5 minutes. Add to that the gullible dopey daughter being smashed up and killed (by the looks) in a car wreck - and it was all, well, RATHER RUSHED!:eek:

I agree with those who have said this remake is far too hurried. And the relationships don't make the same sense because Prue is being playing as a victim, and Gavin as eeevil, which was far from the case in the original - which I loved.

I don't remember Mackenzie, but I do remember 'Alexa' which the bbc screened in 1982.

I pre-ordered the original series of Bouquet from Play last week, can't wait to see it again.:)

I'm sure the current Gavin asked Prue if she " really wanted to see what happened to Paula ", and then later we saw what he'd done to her face.
