Blog Talkback: Geneon Anime Worth Rescuing - Parts 1 and 2

tenjho tenge

Tenchi series.:anime:
true awesomeness...
Gate Keepers: Its so interesting...it has the full lineup to be a typical harem...but it doesnt? Very interesting.

Okay, I can understand that it'll never get aired on TV, but come on! It's the last frinking season! Let the fans get some resolution at the end ie. See Serena and Darien (or Usagi and Mamoru) get married ......arg! I mean, Funimation keeps releasing Dragonball stuff and that's hugely popular; Sailormoon as just a loyal following too!

Cardcaptor Sakura is weird because Nelvana had the rights to the dub if I remember correctly and they completely butchered it. Anyone here remember Cardcaptors on the kidsWB? Basically besides changing characters names like Tomoyo to Madison (Which I can kind of understand, but call Shaoran by his last name, and making kids think his first name is 'Li,' really?) and mispronouncing the name "Sakura," they decided to start on episode 8 instead of the first episode, so the audience doesn't really understand why Sakura needs to find the cards in the first place. proceeded to cut episodes out of the series because they were either the episodes where Shaoran would blush whenever Yukito was around (because it's completely unnatural for a 12 year old to be embarrassed around an older student. They were afraid of homosexual references; which I get, but if they watched the entire show they'd realize that wasn't the reference they should have been filtering.), or filler episodes, like the one where Sakura meets her grandfather for the first time, except she doesn't know it's her grandfather at first.

All of these episodes that were cut may not have seemed too important, but some of them had a lot of details that were kind of crucial to the story. Like seeing Touya get rid of a whirlpool that the Watery card created kind of clued the audience in that he wasn't quite as obvious to what was going on as Sakura had hoped. Even skipping the second episode prevented the audience from knowing how Tomoyo/Madison even knew about Sakura being a Cardcaptor. The audience even misses the reason why Sakura's mother's family, Tomoyo's mother and her grandfather don't get along with her father (Her father was a student teacher when he met Sakura's teenage mother....I know another taboo type subject).

Fan reaction to the show was bad, and Nelvana had announced they weren't planning on releasing a subbed version, so I think Pioneer got the rights to sub it; so they released the unedited, and subtitled episodes as Cardcaptor Sakura, while Nelvana released the dubbed episodes as Cardcaptors. When Pioneer split up into Genon and Pioneer, Genon got the rights to Sakura. Only the movies have both the sub and dubbed version on the same disc, I'd like to think because Nelvana realized it was the only way they could get some decent sales. To this day, I think that show is the example of how American execs can ruin a good show with a bad dubb.

I don't know when Nelvana's rights expire, but they may end up taking Cardcaptor Sakura if they still have the rights to Cardcaptors.

I liked Tenchi in Tokyo, and to me, it's prolly the second best incarnation of Tenchi, after the OAVs (at least the first two, since I didn't see OAV 3, yet).

For most people, it's prolly the Batman Forever of the Tenchi series.

Funi should rerelease the Pretty Sammy OAVs, as well as Magical Project S (and giving the latter a proper dub release w/ the original dubbed Tenchi crew).

I just realized that Battle Athletes Victory is not on the list. It was one of my FIRST DVD series and this would be a nice little license save.

O-chan

Hey, I want to see Sailor Stars in English too. I've been disappointed -but not at all surprised- for years about it. =/

Anyhow, I guess the only one I want to see "rescued" is Captain Harlock/Herlock. I'm a huge fan of anything Matsumoto's done and I totally dug what I saw on the first DVD I'd purchased a long time ago. I'm kicking myself for not picking up the rest of the series when I had the chance (but then again, I didn't have a job at the time and DVD purchases were a luxury).

Does anyone know if the English dub of Higurashi has been saved? My local libarary has aq copy of the Geneon DVD, but I'm not sure if anyone else is distributing it.

I definitely agree with Paranoia Agent. I'll hold off judgment about the list as a whole until the second part is up. I'll have to figure out which ones I'd hope for.

If memory serves that grandpa episode was cut because of the pure pedofileness of it Sakura's Dad and Bro let her go to a man's house whom they never met in there lives and the man dresses Sakura up in cloths that belonged to his dead daughter it actually make sense it got cut.

Sakura pronounced Sa-cuer-Rah instead of Sa-ku-ra/d(R's in Japanese sound like 40% R 40% L and 20% D) the way Viz pronounces Sakura's name is the way Nelvana should've. Kero was pronounced Key-Ro stead of Kay-ro.

Tomoyo's homosexual crush on Sakura was cut in the dub so was Yukito's Toya's and Li's crush on Yukito was changed to Fear instead of a crush I honestly don't see this making it on tv unless Tomoyo Sakura Toya are played off as being cousins like Sailor Uranus and Neptune were BUT wait Tomoyo Toya and Sakura are cousins destint ones that is.

Okay people, you need to learn what the difference is between a license rescue and a newly acquired series. Geneon still owns the rights to every series they have. A license rescue is when another studio steps in and offers to help distribute that series for them. That is what Sentai and FUNi have done so far, but Geneon still retains all the rights they had to the previous series.

Now, seeing as FUNi is placing Air Master on their video web site subbed, there's a good chance it will be one of the series they rescue. The Tenchi's are also likely since FUNi has the rest of the Tenchi series. Paranoia Agent is also likely.

Now I'm surprised you still list Requiem on the list, because we know Starz Media has gotten rights to it since they will begin airing it on Ani-Monday next month. Since we don't know exactly what rights Manga Entertainment has gained though, then I can see why you still list it. I would assume though they gained distribution rights much like they did Now and Then, Here and There.

Cool, thanks for that clarification. In all honesty, I really do hope that FUNi does rescue the rest of the Tenchi series. I have the original Pioneer box set of Universe and was wanting to update on a newer release before the DVD's themselves become warped. I am wondering why Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure was not included on the list. It is under the Pioneer licencing and I did recall seeing it to be re-released under the Geneon title before it's closure.

Part 2 posted, poll added w/ the 10 picks and a handful of other possibilities (only 15 poll choices allowed!)

Just FWIW, yes, there are anime not on the list that I'd be interested in and/or think would be worth getting. I'm actually netflixing New Getter Robo and Hakkenden right now.

Man, what is up with Hellsing Ultimate anyhow? I see there's seven episodes in all right now. Someone should ask Funi during the summer con season. Maybe there's some rights thing going on; I'd be stunned to hear that it somehow didn't sell enough or something.

While I loved both Tenchi Movies, I thought Tenchi Forever far outclassed Tenchi Muyo in Love. IMO, Tenchi Forever is one of the finest animated (and cinematic) pieces in existence today.

And, my vote is obvious: Tenchi.

Sakura's father had met him once, I mean he was his wife's father; it just wasn't a happy meeting. I'm not disagreeing that there were tons of issues with putting it on air, it just could have been done better or at least they could of spliced some episodes together, I mean even the original aired versions of Dragonball and Sailormoon were spliced, and people still watched it.

It was just the first eight episodes didn't have to be cut. In fact, the first episode when you're introduced to Kero-chan is pretty funny. I think they cut any episode that didn't have Syaoran in it, because they didn't want it to be just a "magical girl show." Which was odd considering that at the time the network wanted to try to get greater girl audience, I know, the irony.

However, the issue at hand is whether someone will pick up the sub version of the show and re-release it with a new dub. Does anyone know if Nelvana still own the dub rights?

The thing is that Funi only re-released the four volumes that Geneon had already put out. V, VI, and VII are out in Japan but there's been no sign of a U.S. release. What gives? Has no one taken a look around and seen that vampires are the hottest thing since EVER right now? You'd think they'd be pimping this like there's no tomorrow.

Cardcaptor Sakura was a childhood fave, and I am glad it made the list. It would look wonderful on Blu-Ray.

Also, I've been wanting to see Serial Experiments Lain.
