Blade Runner, 'best sci-fi of all time'

I skipped Blade Runner when it came out as it sounded boring in 1982.

I watched it for the first time in 1992 when Ridley Scott did the Directors Cut.

But I could not find it interesting.

The visuals are gorgeous and accompanied by the Vangelis music the opening minutes are almost hypnotic.

I got the 5 disc Bluray ( not out in the UK) to see if an alternate version would improve matters.

So I went for the cinema version as this was , after all , the version that gave the film its reputation.

But after 45 minutes I gave up.

I will give the "workprint" a go at some point but I fear it will be just as boring.

I was hoping the 5 disc Bluray would be deleted so I could sell it but its still available cheaper than the UK 2 disc Bluray.

The UK is ripped off again as the US set has all the alternate versions in HD

Incredible film, ahead of it's time in terms of visuals. Movie making in the finest traditions.

I have the soundtrack and the Tears In Rain speech is on it.

Overrated and very very dull.
The posters who greet any criticism with comments about preferring Phantom Menace are crass and pathetic.
As was Phantom Menace, but thats by the by.

great sci-fi, but definitely not the best of all time.

personally i've seen loaRAB of great sci-fi but I couldn't definitely say which is the best of all time.

Yeah, when I was younger I just couldn't understand all the raving about Blade Runner. Then, when I was a bit more mature I thought I'd go back and be able to "get it". But it was still just a boring old mess. The attraction of this particular film just escapes me.

I agree with the OP, it is boring.
Also great visuals and soundtrack dont make a great movie see also 2001 (which i've tried to watch numerous times and still can't manage it without falling alseep) if you are going to base it on those factors then they ARE comparable to Phantom Menace lol.
Considering that the UK voted Star Wars the best film of ANY genre should mean something, and I would tie it with Aliens: special edition for the top spot and not just for Sci Fi but for all genre's Star Wars for Family and Aliens for Adults (which btw has the BEST soundtrack 2nd place goes to Empire's soundtrack)

Bladerunner (any version) is up there with Alien (not Aliens), Terminator & Star Wars in my favourites.

Visually stunning, and not reliant on flash bang SFX to drive the story

I would suggest that anyone who thinks it's one of the worst hasn't watched enough truly dreadful sci-fi (The Cat from Outer Space anyone?), but each to their own

*shakes his head* dear oh dear. It's worth watching just for the soundtrack alone. The visuals and story line is incredible. No movie has touched this except for perhaps Aliens.

Nobody will ever agree on a top ten list as in the end it comes down to personal taste. Most top tens are total bollocks but I thought this one was fairly decent (nice to see both Alien and T1 in there in front of their inferior sequels).

Thank god the general public didn't get a vote and you can tell this poll is actually voted for by adults which means we don't end up with childish nonsense like Star Wars voted as number one yet again.

Before the Star Wars fanboys attack me with their virtual lightsabres I like Star Wars, the originals are enjoyable, entertaining movies, it deserves it's top ten place (though I prefer Empire) that's for sure.

Wow, stuck up much? I can plainly see that the Phantom Menace is a pile of plop, while I can also see that Blade Runner is about as interesting as watching a Dog shit in the street then sniff it.

All the "no, you should watch this version" crap doesn't help either.

I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's not my favourite SF film but that list was pretty good. Kubrick's 2001 has also suffered similar criticism to Blade Runner (slow and boring) but it deserves to be up there as well (in front of BR in my opinion.)

And it was nice to see Tarkovsky's Solaris at number 10. It's an incredible piece of film making (but has yet again suffered from being called slow and boring *sigh*)

Oh yeah, becaue there's no big explosions, endless fights and loaRAB of blood its dull and boring. Of course.

Blade runner is one of the best scifi films of all time, beacuse Harrison Ford,Rutger Hauer etc all put in great performances. its based on one of Philip K Dicks excellent novels. The scenery and soundtrack are amazing. You need to sit done in a dark room alone and watch this again.
