"Black Panther (Animated Series)" News & Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

While the animation is terrible for an animated TV series, I think that this animation is perfectly suitable for a motion comic (which is pretty much what this series is). IMO, this should be the standard for all future motion comics.

I just watched the first episode, and I didn't think it was too bad. It may have been because I knew going in that the animation was limited, but it really didn't bother me, and the animation actually played better than I expected. The only thing that bothered me a little were two of the voices. Cap's voice didn't seem to be right for the character, and, as much as I enjoy Stan Lee, I don't think his voice fit his character either.

EDIT: I just looked back at the other comments and see I'm not the only one to feel that way about Cap's voice :)

The impression I got from the preview at NYCC was that they weren't aiming for full 30FPS animation in JRJR's style, but rather for the 21st Century equivalent of those 1960's Marvel cartoons where they moved around cutouts of Jack Kirby comics. As I said in my report, if The Secret Saturdays is what you would have gotten if Hanna-Barbera spent real money to animate Jonny Quest, then what I saw of Black Panther was what you'd have gotten if Marvel spent real money to do those 60's 'toons.

In any event, delayed again. I remember when this was supposed to be out LAST year. Oh, well.

On another, semi-related note, I would get worried about Joe Q's increased involvement in the animation arm that he talks about in that Cup O' Joe interview, expecting that might mean 1) crossovers for everyone, everywhere, 2) chase cover DVD cover variants, and 3) perpetually late DVD releases. However, his answer to "what are your increased responsibilities" is so vague as to be meaningless (something I've always thought Joe Q was exceptionally good at doing). Besides, Spidey is not married in the current version of the show, so no deals with the devil to get rid of THAT one :p.

I didn't want to do this; but I've got a real strong desire to say it:
What issues of "Black Panther" are penciled by "John Romita jr."? The trailer shows that the show is consisted of animated issues drawn by "John Romita jr."

I wouldn't worry, Spectacular Spider-Man is totally outside of Quasada's control as long as Sony has the Spider-Man licence. And they're not going to let go off that until someone pries it from their cold dead fingers.

Ugh, BET is not the place to air this cartoon. BET's basically music videos in pathetic round table idscussions that fall apat within two minutes. Thus cartoon needs to air on Adult Swim. But it doesn't look too good. It's very remniscant of the Captain America/Iron Man/Thor/Sub-Mariner cartoons from the 60s which ripped off a lot of Jack Kirby art. Why can't they just make this have decent animation like the Avengers movies?

Are you serious what happened to it coming to BET? Wow this is stupid is it really that hard to find a network or did the show just suck that much?

It might not even be able to go anywhere else. The show was developed in part by BET so that might be a problem when it comes to airing anywhere else. The station really has no idea what to do with animation.

Hopefully it doesn't stay as a download only series. I've downloaded episodes of newer shows (ie. Pawn Stars, Canada's Worst Driver) and they never look as good downloaded as they do on broadcast TV or DVD (even though they are offered in anamorphic 16:9 standard on the downloads compared to DVD releases of 4:3 mattes of the 16:9). The colors always look darker and more muted on the downloads.

I was just snooping around Shout Factory's site, and I noticed this date for the release of the Black Panther dvd set: 1/18/2011. Do you guys think that date's more or less guaranteed ?

I know how dvd release dates tend to be subject to change, by a week here or there, but I'm hoping that this is promptly released and that it's not a similar sort of issue to what happened with the Itunes downloads, where it looked like the series would be released but then something happened behind the scenes. It would be cool to see the whole series in some form, especially now when it doesn't look like it will ever make it to American television.

ya he is black but y does BET have to put it out Spike had Afro samurai BEThas no business with cartoons
