"Black Panther (Animated Series)" News & Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

It's not really about giving the show to BET. A Black Panther mini-series probably would've never been attempted right now if Reggie Hudlin wasn't the head of BET's programming and writer of the BP comics while setting this into motion. Personally, as far as stations go, Spike isn't a better choice.

Well that was disappointing.

They're currently plugging this as "really faithful to the artist John Romita Jr's work" and I can see why. That's the best way to spin what the animation looks like.

The trailer isn't that good a trailer either. It doesn't make me want to watch it and doesn't tell me what it's going to be about. For all I know it could be set in 8000 BC about a tribe that get's attacked by some guy in spandex called the Black Panther. :p

They also need to turn that background music down or the vocals up because I'd rather not damage my ears listening to this.

It's a mature cartoon, kiddy networks wouldn't work for it.

I do agree that Adult Swim would have been a better place for it. BET is a terrible network now. Ever since Bob Johnson sold it to Viacom it's completely gone down the gutter. I also think putting it on a network like BET alienates it from the general public, who - if they aren't either African American (like myself), into hip-hop, R&B or Soul, etc - might not think the show is geared towards them and pass on it.

If it would air on CN at night, it would get a bigger gathering plus CN seems to know how to promote their shows. With a character not as well known, it's kinda counter productive putting it on a Network that appears to only cater to certain people, rather than everyone like CN.

i don't know about legal reasons, but reginald hudlin writes for the blank panther comics and is also the president of BET, so that makes sense to me.

edit: rick jones all ready said this though

The article does say that he will go back to being an independent producer. It's possible that this means he'll be MORE involved with the show rather than less, since he can focus on it instead of all that other stuff he was doing at BET.

He's also not writing the Black Panther comic at the moment, though I'm pretty sure it's a temporary hiatus. We'll see, I guess.

While I need to see more to make a proper evaluation of the quality of the series...I like what I saw. Thank god unlike IronTeen...The Black Panther seems to be for an older audience. This is at least a PG-13, and that is definitely a good start. The Black Panther is the latest in a long line of Wakandan Chieftans, so the earlier date could be an ancestor til we see the current Black Panther.

is this serious? i can see this show working in the late 60s, because it is exactly like all of those old cartoons...a comic book page with a moving mouth now and then. and here i am thinking that animation had progressed in 40 years.

Let's be honest, now that Hudlin is no longer the head of BET programing, the chances of this show ever airing on BET (or any other TV network for that matter) are slim to none. I strongly believe (and I could be wrong) that the only reason Hudlin was even allowed to write the BP comic (and continue to write for as long as he did, despite plummeting sales on the non gimmick issues) is because he was (a) a Hollywood writer/director and (b) because he was the head of BET programming. I don't think that it's a coincedence (sp) that now that Hudlin is no longer the head of BET programming (a) the animated series keeps getting pushed back/delayed and (b) Hudlin is no longer witing the ongoing BP comic (though he is a consultant and is writing CA/BP mini series set in WW2). I believe that whole BP cartoon was a case of "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours". Marvel allowed Hudlin to write BP and do whatever the heck he wanted with BP (and Storm), and even went so far to saddle his run with gimmicks almost every other issue in order to temporarily boost sales on the book. In return, Hudlin got the ball rolling on a BP cartoon on BET.

I watched the first two episodes a while back. I think it has potential.

The only thing that is frustrating me is the animation, with the runinng and the talk it annoys me.

I've been pretty easy to please when it comes to Marvel stuff but this animation is a little too rough for me

I love the 60's toons and all but as an animated series in this day and age, I think they can afford to do a lot better than that

I'm hoping this is something more along the lines of what was done in the Next Avengers teaser and not actually representative of what the actual show will look like
