Sometimes Kate slipped. She would see Claire trying to fix a leak in the kitchen sink or tighten a screw somewhere in the house, and she would shrug and say "Oh, don't worry about, Jack will get that later" or "I've been meaning to remind Jack about this". She'd stop quickly; her hand coming to cover her mouth, but unable to suppress the sob that would escape her lips. Claire would smile sadly and watch as the other woman excused herself. Claire knew that Kate was most probably going to spend the rest of the day in her room, crying, clutching her engagement ring or one of Jack's old shirts. But she never said anything. Because losing your soulmate was not some thing you should easily get over.
