Whenever I think of great guitarists, I can generally only name ones that played in the 60's through 80's. Ever since grunge it seems music in the US (and maybe UK, too) has been in more of an "anti-technique" mode, which likely explains the lack of guitar solos. Maybe the style of music today doesn't showcase the guitarist as much. But I just haven't had a guitar player really "wow" me lately.
So what folks' thoughts:
Now: Tom Morello, er, Mike McCready (I know I'm stretching it here)
Then: Hendrix, Page, SRV, Clapton, Randy Rhodes, Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Al DiMeola
Also, for those who prefer guitarists Now, list some you like because I'm sure the couple I listed will satisfy maybe two people.
