Better guitarists: Now v Then

Whenever I think of great guitarists, I can generally only name ones that played in the 60's through 80's. Ever since grunge it seems music in the US (and maybe UK, too) has been in more of an "anti-technique" mode, which likely explains the lack of guitar solos. Maybe the style of music today doesn't showcase the guitarist as much. But I just haven't had a guitar player really "wow" me lately.

So what folks' thoughts:

Now: Tom Morello, er, Mike McCready (I know I'm stretching it here)

Then: Hendrix, Page, SRV, Clapton, Randy Rhodes, Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Al DiMeola

Also, for those who prefer guitarists Now, list some you like because I'm sure the couple I listed will satisfy maybe two people.

Dean DeLeo from stone temple pilots inspired me to play guitar... many of the songs on Purple (the cd in my av) have guitar solos. Awesome ones at that. Listen to Silvergun Superman and Army Ants from Purple, and Trippin' on a hole in a paper heart from Tiny Music... damn good guitar solos.

Also, Slash is an amazing guitarist. Mike Einziger (sp?) from incubus can shred when he wants to. John Frusciante has more melodic solos, but he still has speed in some of them. John Petrucci is one of the fastest and most talented guitarists playing right now.

there are just too many scandinavian guitarists that are destroying the guitar world right now to name the single mostest bestest....yah.

IMO,the best all around guitarist of all time is paul gilbert.

I was thinking of rock guitarists. There seems to be a consistent appreciation of technical skills among the metal community and I don't think there has ever been a significant drop off in talent displayed in metal (despite changes in predominant styles/tastes).

It shouldn't be about wanky guitar solos. I don't want to be amazed by a guitarist, I want to hear a song, and a guitarist that can accompany that song and add something to it, and have a really good melodic solo rather than shred for shredding's sake = win.

So current day guitarists I'd say I like Frusciante, Bellamy, Valenti

The Darkness are great because they have cool solos but they're not taking themselves seriously +D

Modern guitarists have some decent riRAB. No one really has wowed me with sheer talent in the last 5 years. Slash will probably be remembered as the last great modern guitarist. For the future Derek Trucks and John Mayer are the future of guitar.
