Best War Films of All Time

Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
From Here To Eternity
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

And good call from the OP with Elem Klimov's "Come and See."

This film has been mentioned a number of times on this forum. It's a remarkable and harrowing piece of cinema and I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to see the full horror of war portrayed sensitively but accurately.

Brotherhood- Korean film. Shown on Filmfour recently. I'm not a big fan of war films but that has to be the best I've ever seen!

Good call on Great Escape and deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now, all great films.

Brotherhood another good one.

I would call Schindlers List a "war film", but if I include that on my list, I would have to give a nod to Escape from Sobibor, one worth looking for.

For any of you who have never seen Stalingrad, it would be in my top 3. (Gettysburg, Bridge Too Far the other two.)

The Thin Red Line

Beautifully shot, but depressing as hell. Contains the great line "It's never necessary to tell me that you think I'm right: we'll just.......assume it"

Is 'Come and See' the one where the german unit 'adopts' the russian boy after they round up the villagers and burn them in a church? I remeber seeing it on channel 4 ages ago, but never new what it was called. Great film, but harrowing.

My top 3 would be:

Patton
Tora!Tora!Tora!
A Bridge Too Far

Others not mentioned:
Jarhead
Hunt for Red October (maybe a bit of a stretch)
Band of Brothers (OK, not a film, but better than SPR imho)
Starship Troopers (ignoring the cheesy Sci-Fi, this was deep, deep down, an intelligent film...honestly!)

Pearl Harbour
U-571

...NOT

Yup, that's the one. There was a flurry of films about a young boy's experience of war in the mid-late 80s- Come and See, Empire of the Sun, Hope and Glory and a re-released cut of Ivan's Childhood but Come and See was the best of the bunch (despite my fondness for Andrei Tarkovsky.)
