British war films?..........The Cruel Sea,Dunkirk,Dambusters,Above Us The Waves,Ice Cold In Alex

Private Ryan?.....VASTLY overrated......stunning opening and ending but the rest of the film is bog standard frankly.....

And of course the immortal 'I know a little German. He's sitting over there!' ;)

Saving Private Ryan
Cross of Iron
Hamburger Hill
The Deer Hunter

Thin Red Line is overrated IMO. 'Oh look, a pretty insect. Isn't war bad and against nature and stuff?'
And we waited how long for such profundity Mr Malick?

Would you say Schindler's List is a war movie? It was set during the war, but not really a war movie. And the same goes for Life is Beautiful - both excellent films though.

Has anyone mentioned We Were Soldiers? - very good. And what about All Quiet On The Western Front?
On the comedy side Kelly's Heroes is great. And Starship Troopers is a war film - I know it's fantasy stuff but it says a lot about war and war mentality - very interesting film I thought.

Schindlers List
Come And See (Idi i smotri)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
Europa Europa
Platoon
The Pianist
Glory
Born On The Fourth Of July

Starship Troopers is great, actually- it acknowledges the inherent fascism of its source material, and plays it as satire with a very straight face. Not an easy trick to pull off. For what was billed as a big dumb action movie, ST really is a hell of a lot more.
