Best OS?

best OS overall? That would be OSX, but if your going with a PC I would stick with XP for at least another year until they weed out all the problems with Vista. If you want an alternative to MS try Ubuntu, but I would dual boot between that and XP.

I second OSX as the best OS...I switched from XP to OSX two months ago, and it's awesome. but for a PC, I'd suggest XP for now but on a high-spec box that will be able to take vista

Definatley Ubuntu....dont see a reason to dual boot...if your used to windows and you dual boot...most likely you will use it as a crutch and never use ubuntu...

the problem with that is...as someone point out earlier, your better off with 'anything but vista'

OSX isnt bad either...BSD based OS...has all the Mac feel, with power of BSD...

Question doesn't make sense, because it depends solely on whether you use it for gaming, music production, coding or whatever. What do you need from your computer?

I love vista. It has nothing to do with being a fan boy. I got it on its release and installed the same day. I have not had one problem with it. It runs quicker than XP did for me. for at least the first month or two i only ran it with 1gb of ram and it ran terrific. now i am at 3 gb and cannot tell that big of a difference. Before i got vista I went online and checked the compatiblity. I dont know if others that are having problems with it did that or not. But i would recomend vista.

SUSE linux is kinda nice.

I use Ubuntu and XP. Only boot XP for Cubase though. Best allround OS? Windows. I like Ubuntu more for day to day work, but Windows has it all. I wouldn't recommend OS X. It looks nice, but it's not that useful. I know some people disagree with me on this, but the OS itself is pretty slow to manouvre (spelling?), and unless you replace the dock with something more useful, you're in for a nasty surprise when you start using it for something bigger than two-programs running at the same time.

I doubt we'll see a tablet mac anytime soon. However you should check out the osx86 project pages, and check to see if any of the tablet PCs are on the compatability list. There are a growing number of people using the hacked OSX image on various PCs and homebuilt boxes.

How will you be upgrading? Do you have the fastest possible cpu? Do you have at least 1G of RAM? Will you be buying a $500 video card? Bigger HD or RAID?

If your PC is older than 3 years, then chances are that it'll cost you about $1000 to upgrade to the latest and greatest.

But, just like in Linux, the person would probably try to install some freeware or shareware program onto it and wouldn't know that it couldn't be done, much less how it is done.

I have a real problem with Windows users who don't know how to back up files. In this respect OSX is a nightmare because, as an administrator, you have to change permissions on files and directories to be able to back them up. Now I usually just tell all my user friends to get a 1G mem stick, and when they have filled it up, to burn it onto a CDR and keep only the essentials on the mem stick after removing most of the files (OSX, XP and Linux).
