Best Horror Movie Ever

Being a long time fan of the genre, I would have to say Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987).

Doug Bradley, as Pinhead, and the rest of the Cenobites created an icon of Horror in the 80's. Ground breaking effects courtesy of Bob Keen and Geoff Portass (Image Animation, Pinewood) set the seen for a host of UK based Barker films to follow, like Nightbreed (aka Cabal, 1990)

Followed by numerous sequels over the next ten years, the original Hellraiser and perhaps the second instalment Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988) remain true cult classics.
 
Yup. I know about that, but I thought it was about a British man with a mental illlness that somehow managed to get an arsenal of firearms.
That can't be right otherwise it would be called The Real British Gun Massacre.:confused:
I hope it is about the nuns as I've never heard of it before and sounRAB fascinating.
Wasn't Chainsaw based on real events?

SCREAM 1. is by far the best horror film ever made!!!! then second not too good the third was ok but the first was such a good film! in fact im going to watch it right now!
 
Very true. It is a classic. BUT if you ever get the chance to watch Wes Craven's 80s remake - DON'T BOTHER - Load of CRAP!!! He really ruined it. Can't understand why someone would take a good movie and wreck it like that.

Obvious word being that you 'think'. Hungerford is in the UK you know? It was some nutter called Michael Ryan who had absolutely nothing to do with Chainsaws. Also the TCM is loosley based on a real psycho in the states called Ed Gain.

That man with the firearms thing was the Hungerford Massacre or something that happened in 1987 I think? So tragic.

Smokey....whats Children of Ravensback? I've never heard of that one...

but basically theres a radiation leak in a small village. a busload of kiRAB pass through it and become radioactive zombies.

to type that sounRAB a little daft and silly however i can quite honestly say what a top film it is.

and the most scary i have ever seen knocked me for six first time round and i have seen so many horror films nothing knocks me usually.
 
The UK version is cut by about 2 minutes, so if you wanna see this I'd import the R1 DVD. It's pretty grim stuff, but it pales in comparison to some of the arthouse stuff coming from France (Irreversible, Rape Me).

The movie hasn't aged too well, in the same way similar movies like I Spit On Your Grave and The Last House On The Left have been robbed of their effectiveness by time (yet both still needed to be cut for UK release!).

Almost any of the Vincent Price movies - especially Dr Phibes

Peter Cushing / morgue / cellar laboratory type film,s are also a welcome relief from the US slasher offerings.

I still have a well worn copy of Lust for a Vampire which goes beyong the usual Hammer flick material

From the States, Nightmare on Elm St 2, the opening scene of the bus load of kiRAB and the ground falling away - surprisingly good.
 
Problem with horror films is that thet don't age well, i.e. they stop becoming scary as you get older.
And the new 'modern horror' films with plenty of gore and FX are just not scary at all. OK if you're under 15 I suppose but 25+ then it really should take a VERY disturbing film to scare you unless you're a big softy or female!

Old films like The Exorcist, Hammer Horror films, Jaws, friday 13th etc scared me witless when I was younger but now are more likely to raise a laugh than anything else.
 
Yes, this is a good one. The scene where Polanski's character watches his neighbour just standing motionless in the bathroom across from his apartment window has stayed with me since I saw it almost 10 years ago, as has the scene where he finRAB a tooth hidden in his wall!
