Best facial expressions you've seen in animation (56k warning)

- Spongebob's *cute* face. The one where his dimples are really showing. That's the face they should focus on marketing because it's so adorable.

- Roger's face in the American Dad ep (forget which one) where he gets high and starts taking out the drug dealers. That was just so incredibly hilarious when his pupils enlarge and goes berzerk.

- Antyime Homer gets that vacant expression on his face. Like in the Simpsons Movie when the wrecking ball is coming back towards him. That look is extremely priceless.

Or maybe, you know, people have different opinions on their idea of interesting facial expressions. Complete caricaturized faces like in R&S and SB are certainly interesting, but who's to say that simpler expressions can't be just as interesting? This is just an opinion thread, so don't take it so seriously if you think someone chose the "wrong" kind of face.

Besides, do you need to draw a line between anime/manga and American cartoons? What's the difference, I say.

Who says it has to be interesting on its own? Why can't people post an expression that's interesting in the context of a specific scene?

Yeah, some of us here may not "get" it, but then again, chances are that some people here will.

this is a good one

cuz I would do that too (among other things) when you see a sexy chick like that

Oh here's another one! That pinhead Patrick expression from "Survival of the Idiots". That had me rolling the first time I saw it. Also that Patrick expression with the curled lips and single tooth from "I'm With Stupid" and "Chocolate With Nuts". That expression reminds me of Grimace from the McDonalds commercials.

Beavis and Butt-head in repose make me crack up, let alone actual expressions.

Finally how about that tour de force of cartoony expressions when Homer has his big heart attack in "Homer's Triple Bypass"?

Uh, sorry, let me explain then.

Birds: When I was watching it, seeing those animal characters that normally have such base expressions suddenly go all sardonic and exasperated really interested me, especially the one on the right. The tilt of the eyebrows, the mouth's expression, it just seemed very fluid and alive to me. That's what I liked about a lot of these pictures, that it always seems like they're in motion, not stiff.

Yagi: I guess it's about the disbelieving wideness of the eyes and mouth, and the added stretching of the skin around the eyes increased that.

Collette: I liked how her jaw started out in a normal position, then just totally jammed out like that.

Shuu: I guess it's more interesting in motion, but the way his face went from that blank stare into that feral expression had quite a bit of impact to me.

Cow: Like the birds, I enjoyed the fluidity of its expressions; the way its lower eyelid comes up in the big pic really adds a punch to his joy, and the 2nd and 3rd little pics made good use of the mouth and eyes in non-standard postitions.

Beautiful. Possibly the finest carton hort ever made, IMO.

Too bad the3eds.com isn't working, I have some choice expressions I'd love to share with you all from said series.

Two that definitely come to mind:

- In "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", when 'he whistled for Max'. The dog jumps on the sleigh, panting happily about going for a ride. The Grinch gives this 'are you kidding me?' look to the audience. The way it's drawn is pure Chuck Jones and one of my favorite moments in that special.

- The "Kim Possible" episode, "Mind Games". Drakken (having switched his body with a guard to gain access to a weapon) grills Shego about what happened to his old body. You almost never see her smile (smiles made because of self-satisfaction or superiority don't count here), and the nervous grin she makes is just wonderful.

I think half of us are utilizing wild and bizzare looking expressions and the other half are utilizing subtle, expressionless faces which have some deeper meaning apparently.

Not a single mention of Ren and Stimpy or Bob Clampett Looney Tunes?

My favorite Ren and stimpy expressions are the ones in the history eraser button, both Ren and Stimpy's expressions are genius, theres so many episodes.

The Daffy Duck cartoon Great Piggy Bank Robbery has some superb expressions in the phone call scene, just so frantic and crazy.

There's about a million of them in Tex Avery cartoons and some really nice ones in Roger Rabbit.

I gave this some thought, and the first one that came to mind was from an episode of Cowboy Bebop called "Toys in the Attic." Early in the episode, there's some business with some shishkabob getting overcooked. Later, our fearless hero Spike is preparing to hunt down a mysterious threat on the ship, arming himself with guns, ammo, a flamethrower, and...the kabob skewer from earlier, with a hunk of burned meat still on it.

Suddenly curious, Spike takes a bite of the burnt hunk, aaaaaaand.....

One of my favorite moments of the entire series, right there.

These many screenshots from the episode "Homecoming" really depict the distress, power, and emotion that the episode is all about, how Rose feels about betraying Jake for her parent's safety, how Jake's initial response to discovering of her break-in were, and the flawless finish to the story.

No love for you, though.
