Best decade in cartoon history?

I'd have to go with the 1940's, it made cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Popeye, and Mickey Mouse more famous then they already were and gave several major technological advances to the industry that remained for several decades after.

I say the '40's because of Looney Tunes and the classic Disney shorts. Also two of my favorite Disney movies came out then, Fantasia and Bambi.

It's a true thing though, I made a post about it a couple years ago. A zoo in Ohio had a new aardvark in the 1880s so they made a flipbook to celebrate it.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot about anime. Well, I agree with what you said here 100%. Most, if not all, of the anime I like is from the 80's, with a couple of exceptions (mainly Lupin the Third, which is mainly from the 70's even though there was also an 80's series).

Different strokes for different folks. Most of the series you post as reasons for liking the Seventies are my reasons for despising the decade ...

My praise for American animation of the period would be for movies and television specials. Otherwise most of my praise would be for non-American films and television shows (the Japanese standard was already going high in terms of story and design, but not in animation technique.)

This is a very relative question and while I was a child of this era, I have to go with the 1990's for a couple of reasons.

-3D computer animation was finally realized to its full potential (yeah, it started in the 80's, but it was still very experimental in that time).
-Higher quality animation-wise for television cartoons (Batman, Animaniacs, Ren and Stimpy).
-Beauty and the Beast became a serious Oscar contender. Also, Disney's best decade by far.
-The birth of digital 2D cartoons.
-More creator-based cartoons on TV that bridged the generational gap.
-Anime was becoming more widely recognized on both video and TV.
-The Simpsons ushered in a new breed of animated sitcoms.
-The birth of Cartoon Network.

The flaw in your argument is that Looney Tunes, Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home and Rocky & Bullwinkle aren't '90's shows. I'm not sure if reruns from previous decades should be counted as part of why the '90's were so allegedly great.

its to hard to chose one single decade each had its ups & downs (although the 90's tottaly rocked!!!)

Id say the mid 80's-late 90's was the golden age of US animation, before that there were some good toons but not nearly as many as made between 1984-2000!

I mean seriously look at the cartoons made by WB, Disney, Nick, and others made between those years to the stuff now, no contest, the classics PWN!:p:D:D:sweat::evil:

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I didn't see anything in the original post that said it had to be made in the decade, just what do you think was the best decade for cartoons. I think if we are going to bring different decades into this, then the technology, access, and choices people had with cartoons plays a big role as well.

What's so funny about those decades? Just off the top of my head the 70s saw the start of Jan Svankmajer's career, Ralph Bakshi shaking up Hollywood animation, arguably a golden age for British kids' TV, some early work from Caroline Leaf, about half of Kihachiro Kawamoto's shorts and most of Yuri Norstein's films.

And the 80s had the start of Channel 4's reinvigoration of independent British animation (with Nick Park's career starting at the end of the decade), beginnings of the Disney renaissance, the release of a good portion of the Brothers Quay's filmography and some classics from Studio Ghibli. Both decades are good contenders if you ask me, the 80s in particular.

By that logic then clearly 00's are the best because almost every good show from a previous decade is repeated on some network somewhere. ;)

:^: What she said. :^:

I meant I would've gotten a good laugh out of seeing praise for something like Filmation.
There was some good stuff in the 70's and 80's (indeed, some of the stuff Monkeyfunk stated) and obviously 90's, but was it enough to make up for Filmation, Hanna-Barbera? :o

Touche. I want to argue that i've seen a decline in the choice of reruns on basic cable in the 00's. But I'm not the queen of the TV schedule and networks vary from place to place, so I can only go by my experience.;)

Honestly, I can't bring myself to pick one decade with the "these particular cartoons came out in 19whatever, which makes it the best decade for cartoons." reasoning. Innovation didn't stop at Warner Bros. in the 50's or Hanna Barbera in 60's.

The 90s. It was like a cartoon renaissance, what with the intro of CGI and flash. Also the variety of cartoons that was offered on different stations( Nick, Cartoon Network, MTV animation, Fox cartoons).

I still remember back when I was younger I would watch Rugrats in the day time, than I would swith over and watch Cartoon Sushi or The Critic at night when my parents weren't around. Hah, I'd do anything to watch more cartoons:D
