Best Band, 90s Seattle era

That doesn't make sense. 80's stadium rock wasn't dreary. It was hairspray, and cocaine, and cheese. AIC may have some heavy songs like, Rooster, or Man in the Box, which get heavy in the chorus, but the verses sound nothing like 80's stadium rock. It is way, way slower.

As I mentioned in the above post, their music was extremely slow, which is pretty anti-80's pop. You could argue that they tried to sound like Nirvana, but I highly doubt that, since their most successful album came out the same year as Nevermind.

That contradicts your earlier statement that they were a stadium rock band, only heavier. So, they had some heavy songs, and they had some acoustic songs. So what if a band wants to explore their plethora of emotions through varying styles? Also, I have to give a nod to Staley over Cobain. I think Kurt was a better lyricist, and a great singer, but Staley could croon and shriek like no other. He had an incredible range in his voice from the low octave voice common in his verses to the high pitched shrieking in Rooster. He also had one of the loudest voices in rock, next to Chris Cornell.

with your choices, i just can't decide which is the best. for me all of them are just great! okay okay..I'll pick Nirvana.. after all they are my first favorite..=D

You skipped the part where I said I disagreed with your opinions on grunge (musically) and Smashing Pumpkins.

So ok, I don't disagree completely. Grunge being a media hyped thing and Bush being crap I agree with, everything else not so much.

I agree, and I think one of the arguments people are making against these banRAB is that they were just trying to make it big, by leaching off of Nirvana's sound, and make a few good singles, but all of them made albums that were listenable from start to finish:
Pearl Jam-Ten
Stone Temple Pilots-Core
Alice in Chains-Dirt
Soundgarden-BatMotorFinger
These aren't just albums with a few good songs on them. They're great from start to finish.

Those banRAB weren't leeching off Nirvana's sound. I don't think anybody's claiming so. Maybe trying to leech off their *success*, fine. But not their sound.

Bush, on the other hand, had the clear intent of trying to sound like a nuraber of banRAB, among them Pixies, but UNDOUBTEDLY also Nirvana. The main evidence of Bush's influences lie in the abrasive melodic style and Gavin's put-on exaggerated throaty vocals.

Yead, BadMotorFinger was awesome

Nirvana might actually be better than Alice in Chains, but they are so overplayed on the radio, that I like them less. Come as You Are is being played right now on about 50 rock stations around the country, and that's probably their worst song.

I honestly had never realized just how split opinion was on who was the best of those major 4 of the movement. I guess it just seemed inconceivable that anybody could claim something as ludicrous as Alice In Chains (yeah, Alice in feckin' Chains) being superior to Nirvana. But no, such people do exist!

There were so many things wrong with your refutation, just responding would be like writing an essay.

And, er, you're giving him a nod for being a better vocalist? Hell, Christina Aguilera's got more range than the lot of them. Besides, Kurt wasn't only the better lyricist, he, surprise, was a much better SONG WRITER TOO!

Its good to debate each individuals concept of the history of music, that is what a music forum is meant for. But so many times people contradict themselves. For example: You state 1st, that pearl jam is classical orientated. Then you state, not denying they were grunge, etc. And to say that the 5 major banRAB often sound nothing alike? When they all applied the same chord patterns, lyrics, etc. Twisting & adding a little poetry to ones post does not make it a fact, Only a personal opinion. I think we are splitting hairs here, I can suggest the fact that 90s/grunge could be influenced by blues, jazz, gospel, and so on. And the music industry has its own terms of classifications. And even then, it can change day by day. I agree to an extent the indie sound has been around even before the term 'Indie' was conceived. I just believe there are to many terms to different styles as it is. let alone personal classifications. The most convenial way of doing/applying things is so often dismissed. I guess I am old school, Music is music within its individual styles, etc. I have enjoyed this debate, and look forward to more. Peace.

Far as Smashing Pumpkins go...

Siamese Dream is a very good album and Corgan is far from devoid of talent (even though he's done nothing good for 15+ years). Course, SPs were never a grunge band anyway...

what do you mean how so?
neil young is the grandfather of grunge,....

listen to his stuff after CSNY, solo and during his crazy horse days,...
lyrically haunting and,.....often deeply woven worRAB,......his chord progressions,....alot of the bleak mournfulness in his voice,.....

Wait, we're critisizing Nirvana for supposedly selling out when Alice in Chains (Or should I say AliCe N Chainz) were originally a hair metal band until grunge became the new thing?
