I believe you pay the $499 ($100 instore discount) then get $200 in programming credits. That was how it was explained to a neigbor of mine a couple of months ago anyway.

Called them again, and waited for the 3rd offer... This was it... The CSR wouldnt bulge and even stated that I had 18 months to go on my contract; so cancellation fees would be high.

I got:

1 Free new HD PVR rental for a year
20% Programing credit for 1 year
One time $50 Credit

CSR said that I will not go into a new contract; so I will still be bound to the same one for 18 mor months.

Be carefull with the win-back offers. Make sure you really check into them and make sure you're going to get exactly what they say they're going to give you. Especially if it involves other things other than just TV service. I worked for shaw for a very long time and when i was there there were a lot of CSR's promising many things especially when it came to other services such as internet that they just couldn't fulfill and then dump on the next rep or another dept to deal with afterwards. Winbacks were a big thing for them there and they really pushed to give those ppl just about anything that would get them to sign backup because it was a bonus on thier paycheque.

As for the phone system i can tell you that the call back feature was really really annoying for most reps. Half the time you'd get voice mail right away or ppl just wouldn't answer.

I'm beginning to think that the best way to do anything, and i've pretty much known it all along just havn't taken advantage of it because i just don't want to make a big fuss is to deal with the retention dept for anything now. At least they can get you something if you're a current sub or need new equip. Sad really that its come to this. It used to be ppl would get upgraded out of old equip and were rewarded for long time accounts. I guess they've figured they make more money with ppl like me who just acept what they have to offer and give rewards to those who complain.

There are lots of true FTA channels out there
But, if I was on the other end of the phone at the retentions dept, it might be sound like your prices are too much to pay, when you can use a FTA box and get free tv
You may be using it for TRUE FTA, but, they may think you are using it for Bell, seeing as there is already a dish aimed , with a cable right to your tv set
How much were the rate increases for you?
It is a hard pill to swallow after getting the discounts for 1-2 years, and then getting the bill for the real price
What can you do

Friend phoned Bell up today. He has been a Bell TV customer for 7+ years, averaging $55. + taxes a month all these years, and w/ 4 old style receivers on account. No contracts and no rentals so far.

He wants to get a HD PVR, and so he asked if there is any special offer, b/c Shaw has some offer, etc. Bell rep said can give 2 months worth of monthly credit, about $120. in total, and that's it, nothing more. Friend mentioned that he was going to buy an HD PVR from a store.

I don't know, but that doesn't sound like matching a new customer deal. A new customer buying a 9242 will get $300. programming credit, and either $100. discount at Bell store, or $150. Gift Card at London Drugs; all together a $400. to $450. discount, and my friend can only get less than $120., about 1/4 of a new customer offer.

Not sure how you guys did it, but it doesn't sound much retention to me. Not only that, the rep told my friend that "If you were going to cancel, make sure you gave us 30 days notice", when he asked if he could cancel, and asked his brother to activate a new account to enjoy the benefit, which the rep said "well, I guess in theory".

For being under contract for 18 more months...I'm surprised they offered you anything at all!

I think you did pretty good.

I bought mine over the phone from the retentions guy (not in a store). They charged my credit card the full price, then I get a $300 credit back.

Bad thing about that is you pay tax on the full $600, but only get $300 back which makes your net cost $378, or the equivalent of paying $334 for the receiver, not $300. The relative good thing is if you have One Bill, the TV credit works against everything (not just TV services) so you get your money back fairly quickly.

Yes, but a person should not be naive about it either. If you know you got a promo or discount for a specific period of time, you must be aware of the full price and that at some point you will have to pay it.

Whenever I look at a monthly service cost, I factor in what I ma paying before and after discount. At the end of that period the choices are to pay the full amount or switch services. Chances of continually "getting a deal" should be considered slim at best.

Common sense to me. It isn't like some other companies that hide the discounts from you. Every bill shows the full amount than your credits.

I got the following:
HD PVR rent free for a year.
HD programming free for 6 months
30% off programming for a year.

Sweet deal.

PS I'm in Moncton. Expressvu is the only provider that offers a dual tuner PVR. Rogers has been promissing for 4 years to get us one. fyi, Rogers was offering me VIP + with the movie package, HD programming for 62.99 for one year no contact.

Ooops. I made a mistake! They offered me the 6141 with one month service, not the 9242.

Sorry!

R

I called in to cancel and was offered 40% off programming for one year. Our bill is over $100 per month so the savings are significant. I decided not to cancel.

IM in my 2nd year of my contract i just phoned in telling bell my story how shaw wants to buy me out blah blah blah i got transferred to the loyalty department right away no questions asked i got my 30 percent discount

It doesn't sound like your friend spoke to retentions. If you just call up and talk to the average CSR, you'll get offers like your friend got. I called twice and got about the same thing. To speak to retentions, when you call up the very first thing you say is "I'd like to cancel my service please." You'll then get transferred to retentions, and then you should have no problem getting half off a PVR, and possibly other credits depending on how far you feel like pushing it.

A second retention deal won't be as easy to come by. If I had a 9200 I would wait to play this card on a 9242 swap.

Pay the full price, you have had a deal for the last how long.?

Come on they need the money give them a break, pay full for a year then get a deal.....lol

The reason I used chat was because someone of RFD claimed they were successful getting 30 or 40% off through chat. Thought I would give it a shot.

I am acutally contemplating getting shaw for basic cable and then going with Apple TV for HD content. I never watch live tv as I am a full time student and have a full time job. When I do watch TV epidsodes, I FF through all commericals. Looking at the cost benefit of just downloading shows like House, ER, L&O EVU, CSI from apple TV and paying for a season or by episode. Wonder if I would come out ahead.

JimC, thanks for making me smile and having a good laugh. Do yourself a favor. Dump bell and all there products. I was a loyal customer for years and years. I had all there services, phone, internet, and satellite. Over the course of the last few years and nothing but poor poor customer service, poorly informed bell employee's, unfair pricing for current customers vs new. I had enough of them. I dropped every bell service I had. I never looked back and never had a regret about leaving. I make sure I tell everyone I know and encourage others to leave bell and there services. Let me say it was the best move I did. I encourage all to walk away without looking back !

Rententions called me yesterday to discuss my cancellation... they said they could not protect anyone from that price increase, it was for all subs.

My friend doesn't own a gun so I don't think he has his gun blazing. I also don't think he yelled or was very demanding either. He mainly asked, and then got no retention deals except a 2 month credit if he bought an HD receiver from retail. That's it.

He was also told that he would loose his 4 receivers if he cancelled. He couldn't understand because he bought and owns those receivers, so how those receivers will get "lost"?

Another rep told him that he would not get any new customers promo ever, since they have his account already as existing customer, even though he cancelled. The stressing point is "for ever and ever". I read on their website that new customers mean not a customer within the last 6 months. So there is another controversy.

Now the only diff. I can think of is that he has always dealt with the Chinese speaking Call Centre #, so would that make a difference? Would English speaking team be better?
