Arthur Wontner as Sherlock Holmes

This is a long shot but there always seems someone on here who always knows!

I've recently come across the Sherlock Holmes films starring Arthur Wontner from the early 1930's. 3 of them are in the public domain and easily obtainable, Triumph of Sherlock Holmes, Sign of Four, and Murder at the Baskervilles.

The other 2, The Sleeping Cardinal (aka Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour) and The Missing Rembrandt (aka Sherlock Holmes and the Missing Rembrandt) do not seem to be in the public domain and although they are easy to find as movie listings, I can find nowhere so far where they are for sales or available for viewing. I've also seen nothing to say they are both "lost". In fact I know Sleeping Cardinal does exist. However it does seem The Missing Rembrandt may well be lost.

Having seen the other three, I would like to see the one that does definitely exist.

I don't really expect anyone here to know much of Wontner but perhaps some ideas where to look etc?

this site may help?

a few hours later i had an email back saying they knew someone who had a copy of it on video which was copied from the old type reels and would copy it for me for a small charge in fact the price of the tape its self and postage cost me about

Personally I think Wontner is a very good Holmes. The films are old and were obviously on a small budget. However looking around some of the many Holmes websites it seems many prefer Wontner to Rathbone. I think one of them was a big success in America.

All 3 films are available from legal public torrent sites. I believe you can also purchase them from Amazon etc.

Arthur Wontner of course I know of him but then I am a bit of a Holmes fanatic.

Several have turned up in a local UK store "Poundland" they had many old film and tv titles 3 to a dvd and at a pound a go were well worth it.

I got about half the Basil Rathbone titles there as well.

3 Classic crime films of the silver screen where how they were named.
They also had Horror and comedy titles in other similar series.

Sadly I got the same Wontner titles you did

And also managed for

Thanks!

I'm aware of the Poundland DVD's but don't have one nearby. There's actually a website devoted to all Poundland releases here: http://www.mjsimpson.co.uk/triplebillsalpha.html

I think Missing Rembrandt is lost. However it seems a print of Sleeping Cardinal was found in America but I can't find any information as to whether its actually been released anywhere.

The Ron Howard series was for sale on Bid-Up TV a few weeks ago.
