Art v. writing v. both...?

I have, since about fifth grade, been determined to go to college for animation, then go to Disney and be an animator. Even now, that sounds like fun, but reality has set in, and I don't know how likely it is for me to actually achieve that. I hear that it's more probable for me to end up working at some fast food restaurant for the rest of my life.

It's also been pointed out to me that, not to sound snooty, I've got enough intelligence that I could do something in another field. I've thought about that, and I love writing as well, and considered going to college for creative writing or something for awhile.

The more I think about it, the harder it is to choose one or the other, and the idea of going to a state university (Ohio State University, for example) and double majoring in Art and Creative Writing.

It seems, though, that there are no colleges with decent programs in both fields...at least none of the ones I've looked at do. Does anyone know of a college I've missed?

And for what I suppose is the root of my question: in your opinion, what should I do? Is one of these ideas stupid, or does one have more likelihood of success than another? I don't really know what sort of answer I'm expecting, as it would surely differ by opinion, but more opinions never hurt, and they would certainly be appreciated!

I say you go to a film (or art) school for 3d animation. I plan to go to a film school, and along with that I want to do screenwriting. The reason I chose this field is because I love to write aswell, and I want to direct/produce movies and stuff, so I chose that specific field because I can learn both together. But you can definatly find art and creative writing if you look into art schools. For ex. the art institute (they have several locations in the u.s.a), They will offer both because well writing is an art as well! Good luck!

Well, first of all, I don't recommend creative writing as a major. Either you have talent as a fiction writer or you don't, you may graduate with the degree, but quite frankly, if you are an amazing writer, you don't need the degree to get published. If you want to do something semi-related to writing, I would suggest a major in technical journalism ["regular" journalism is declining and nearly impossible to start a career in]. Then, I would suggest that you do your double major in art, or animation, however, go to the school for the first major. Because while getting an education in art will help improve your craft, again, you either have that talent, or you don't...

In my opinion, what college you go to only matters so much, it sounds cliche and over used, but it truly is not about the school you go to, but what you do with the education you get. I suggest you go to a university you like, where it is close (or far, if thats what you prefer) to close, (and personally, I didn't go to Ohio State because its out of state and they didn't have the major I wantd, but its a great school)

So my suggeston is to go where you want, and during the summer get internships in animation and/or journalism (or whatever other field you choose). Good luck and have fun!
