Are you for a Constitutional Amendment banning burning the flag?

I think what we see in the US today represent's democracy's end game. Divided into rival factions, each seeks to use the power of government to assault the other.

Flag burning is opposed, not because of anything intrinsic about burning a flag, but because flag burning is something "liberals" do - and any excuse to constrict, punish or imprison them will be leapt upon. Speech against the Iraq war should be censored - not because of any principled objection to free speech, but because speaking against the Iraq war was something liberals do.

When Bush said, you are either with us, or you are with the terrorists, he was not speaking to governments abroad, about being with America or with the terrorists, he was speaking to the electorate. The real enemy in the war on terror is not the "terrorists", it is the portion of the American people who do not support the values of the Neocons.

There are places where cross-burning is banned.

But really, cross-burning is more of a direct threat to a person or a group of people. It's more akin to marching in the street chanting "We're going to kill all niggers" than it is to burning a flag, which is like chanting "I hate the US, or I hate the US government."

One is more of a direct threat, and the other is more of an expression of displeasure.

I'll add another twist.

Why is it limited to the American flag? Surely it should be all flags or none? What makes the American flag any more important than others? No matter how nationalistic/ egoistic/ patriotic you are, surely you can see that the American flag is no more "sacred" than any other flag. If you think it is, I'd love to read an explanation as to why (and no, VoR, your silly "You don't get it.................................................................................... ........................................................ .................................. .............." won't do.

EDIT: VoR seems to have another weapon up his arsenal. "I am right because you don't get it" seems to be the winning line of argument.

Conservatives see flag burning as a pressing issue. I predict that as this constitution admendment gathers momentum you will see more flag burnings. Leading the conservative, who use circular reasoning, to say "See this is a problem". Not realising that the only reason there is an increase in flag burning is because they are pushing the idea. The mind of a conservative is so reactionary.

I did not say the exact amount, but 17 is 17 to many and your hero Clinton did nothing about it just like he did on every terrorist attack against this country......

For the life of me I don't know how you can trivulize the lives of 17 American sailors.......Is nothing sacred with you except murdering babies in the womb and gay marriage?

With all due respect (very little indeed), I don't think it would be a problem. those of us who HAVE fought are geenrally better equipped to do it than the shopkeepers and motor poolers, and frankly, I think you would be hard pressed to find a combat vet who would not agree with me.

Your use of hypothetical violence is pretty pathetic. Leave combat, and the likely motives of those involved in combat, to those who have been there and done that. Once the shooting starts, nobody gives a rats ass about the flag. Once you have been in one firefight, the only motivation to keep you going back is either large sums of cash, or fear of a lengthy prison sentence. Proudly serving your countyry does not last much past basic.

That's the best thing about instituting this amendment, because of the way it will outlaw unpatriotic activity it will flush out the miscreants who hate the great nation of America so that they can be detained and disposed of finally, and discourages further political crimes. By weeding out those undesirable elements of society, we can make America great again!
