Are there any places in the world you would love to live and experience their culture?

Im looking for a destination to start my year long working holiday. I want somewhere hot, quite and above all very different from my way of life in the UK.
My ideal destination would be a quite village somewhere just north or south of the equator. Somewhere spiritual and tranquil.
Any ideas?
