Are there any movies in which the baddie(s) come out on top? (possible spoilers)

I sometimes think it would be really cool for Hollywood to break with tradition and give the bad guys a break for a change. Even in the most exciting movie storylines, there's always this background feeling that you know the good guys are going to win through in the end.

But has this actually ever been done in a big movie before? Have the baddies ever really won the day?

The only sort-of-example I can think of is the Usual Suspects, but that's really just a baddie "getting away with it." And I can think of a few films where the "bad guy" does succeed, but isn't really a bad guy - more of a loveable rogue. Also, if a bad guy does appear to be on top at the end of a movie, there's always a sequal in the pipeline where the good guys will set things back to normal.

Wouldn't it be cool for the James Bond villain to succeed in his evil masterplan just once? Or for the evil terrorists to kill all the guys who are sent to take them down? Or for the bank robbers to get away with the cash?

Why can't evil succeed, just once?!

Most *if not all* movies follow the same narrative. Good *almost always* triumphs... I am sure someone will come along to prove me wrong though :o

The first film that springs to mind where you want the "baddie" to win is Heat. This played with the classic film narrative as the viewer felt empathy with the 'baddie' but alas good won in the end!

Saw.

You could argue all the others, with the exception of the sixth installment, but they are a bit to complex in my opinion. In only the first movie is Jigsaw an actually baddie and Hoffman isn't a true villain until the sixth movie.

"Inside Man" enRAB this way, as does "Quick Change" although both films focus on the bank robbers themselves and paint them as the 'heroes' of the film, as opposed to them being evil and the hero having to actually take on and defeat them.

Exactly - the only way baddies win is when they're made out to be heroes or loveable rogues!

I want a really evil baddie, a character who you really hate, to win....just for once!!!!

Seven and Carrie.

And this one is kind of a stretch but how about The Mist?

They escape from the supermarket only to have the man shoot everyone else in the car, including his son, as a mercy rather than be killed by the beasties... only to find out that it wasn't a beastie approaching but a tank surrounded by soldiers

Did the baddie 'win' in Candyman? my memory is a bit hazy.

I know she saved the baby in the fire but was it at the expense of her own life? and I presume Candyman himself wouldn't die.

Quite often horror films end up with the baddie unexpectedly triumphant. Such as Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and Drag Me To Hell. A few spagetti Westerns do something similar.
