Ivy League Kid

I live in America but oh my so many americans' attitude toward everything just irks me. So many of them are so arrogant, loud, obnoxious, and very ignorant. When I visited London, New Castle, and Birmingham a few weeks ago, I was much more impressed by the intelligence of the average British people I talked to. Many were well informed about american and european politics, conversed with much courtesy and politeness(americans could certainly learn from this!), and were much more cosmopolitan and world aware than americans. My question is are the brits more educated than the americans or did I just run into an extraordinarily educated sample of people? In America, the only people who in my opinion are comparable to this level intelligence I saw in britain were people who went to ivy leagues(harvard, yale, princeton,etc) or top-ranked american universities.
