Apple iPhone 4 vs. Samsung Galaxy-S

Now that it is closer to the release date for both of these phones which phone will be better? I know it is a broad question, but I want to compare everything from its potential to its display lol?

Because I will most likely get one of these two phones because I returned my HTC Tilt2 because it couldn't compete with 1GHZ Snapdragon chips and am now in the market for one of these two.

If we particularly discuss Samsung Galaxy superAMOLED vs iPhone 4 retina display, then one can say Galaxy has been equipped with superAMOLED display screen and Samsung is known because of superAMOLED so i think it will be better or equal with iphone 4 as regard of display.

I really don't understand why people make such a huge deal out of the retina display or the super AMOLED... if it's viewable, then it's fine by me. Do I really need the ability to not see pixels or is having vibrant colors really that necessary? I don't think so; at least not for me anyways.

As for the phones itself, I have trouble seeing success for the Galaxy S because of the lack of flash for the camera (hello?!) and Samsung's history of software updates. Then again, I love the iPhone 4's hardware but I hate the iOS that comes with it.

Since I want to use Android as my phone OS, I am just waiting to see what comes after the Galaxy S. Hopefully there will be something better and I won't be disappointed.

Super AMOLED is a big deal. Really. Trust me. I see it with my own eyes. Put any phone next to it, even the Nexus One, and light it up.

Wait till you see the screen on the Samsung Wave.

Just as you don't understand why people make a huge deal out of display, I don't make a big deal out of no flash, I mean thats what cameras are for right? anyways it depends on what you want from a phone. yes flash would be great but not a huge deal for me

I am not sure about this (if it is true) but I thought I read somewhere that the Galaxy-S would be getting Froyo pretty soon after its launch. However, I could be wrong

Another thing to consider about the Galaxy S. Even without Froyo, it comes with a mobile wifi hotspot. Swype is also included. There is also a neat app bundle with it, like Aldiko ereader, though I have not tried AllShare yet.

The TouchWiz UI feels like a lame and tacky attempt to imitate the iPhone UI, but it does have the best notification bar and lock screen design of all the Android phones I know.

I also read it was announced today that the Galaxy-S will be getting Froyo fairly quickly, but does that mean the Captivate will also get it when the Galaxy-S gets it?

It should.

Would have been nice if the AT&T version came with an LED Flash and a front facing camera......but that might be too much competition for the iPhone 4. Either way, I will have both.

I have never seen the Super AMOLED on galaxy S, but when comparing the Nexus 1 screen to the Iphone4, there are not much difference. Iphone4 is a little sharper. But FOR GOD FKK Shake, my human eyes tell me that it's not a freaking big deal. ggeeezzz... beside that...I played with all 3 different iphone4 at the store, and they were all slower than the N1 Froyo. If it's true that Galaxy S is better than N1, then Iphone4 don't hold a candle.....

fan boys can disregard my comments.

I own both a Nexus One and a Galaxy S. I will tell you the difference of the screens is that obvious. Yeah. Seriously.

But there are a few things that are off putting on the Galaxy S. Like the shameless iPhone mimicry. Like when you charge the phone, you get this big green battery indicator which looks exactly like the one on the iPhone. They put the screen wake on guess what, the middle button. Just like you know what. The TouchWiz application menu swipes left to right, like guess what, the iPhone, and no it does not scroll up and down like most Androids. There is also those dots that you see on the iPhone too.

I also notice a few apps that gives issues on the Galaxy S for some reason. No, they don't hang, but they seem to suddenly lag in a way I don't notice them do so in an HTC Android.

The body doesn't befit a high end smartphone too. It doesn't have the heft, smoothness and feel of a Nexus One or HTC Desire on the hand. It does feel tight and strong, looks like its not afraid to go take some licking.

But, collectively it has a lot of perks going beyond the bright and sharp screen:

Best factory lockscreen of any Android.
Best approach to a notification bar in any Android, like putting Wifi and Sound settings on the bar.
Comes with Swype keyboard. You need to enable it though.
Great software bundle, including Aldiko ereader
Mobile wifi hotspot - you don't have to wait for Froyo on this.
1.85gb to store apps, which is 10X more than the Nexus One (185mb). You can go apping like crazy here.
16gb built in, plus an extra SD card slot for more.
Samsung app store, for Samsung's own special Android apps.
Some great widgets that rival HTC's.

Generally, it all feels faster and smoother than a Nexus One. Except on some ficky apps.

An example of Samsung own Android app is the RoadSMS. Basically its an SMS text program that turns on your camera for a camera view, with the software keyboard superimposed. So you can text and keep a view of the road ahead.

Unlike HTC Sense, which decides to forego the Android 2.1 Gallery app, Samsung has the wisdom to keep this in, but with a twist --- they got Picasa sync. Any pics you got on Picasa will show up on Gallery. Only place where I see something similar is done is through the Sony Ericsson Mediascape for the Xperia X10.

I just found out that the Samsung Galaxy S (int version) can do video out through the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Does anyone know if the tmobile or verizon version will do this. Also - does anyone know how loud the speaker is. I'm pretty sure this is going to be my next phone. Time to upgrade my g1

Some claim that Samsung Galaxy S' Super AMOLED is better than that of the iPhone 4's Retina Display and for me the main advantage of Samsung is they manufacture their own display unlike Apple which makes me think that the technology iPhone 4 offer with their Retina display may soon be available with some other phones too, just maybe. I think we all can do a better judgement of which is better if someone can kindly post some picture comparison of the 2 phone's display quality side by side.

When comparing two things like S Amoled vs. Retina Display is the little difference won't matter? If the color of the other one is a little sharper it doesn't matter? I'm paying huge though for my smartphone so yes it matters for me after considering the whole package like OS and hardware. For me Galaxy S has a LITTLE ADVANTAGE as a package so it will be galaxy s any time of the day...

My Nexus One didn't have Picasa sync. Its the first version with the T-Mo band. It appears those that came with the AT&T band had the Gallery revision that had Picasa sync.

I tried the Galaxy S for 2 days, it's a good phone. But not worth 600 US$. The hardware is great but the software lagged for me. The browser lags when opening heavy pages. The loudspeaker is really low. The camera picture quality is average, NO FLASH, so no night photography and I mainly disliked the overall plastic build, it will feel so so cheap in hand. But the 4'' Super AMOLED screen is awesome, the colors are so vivid. I returned the phone, it's a no upgrade for me from my old i8910. Instead I bought a Samsung Wave/S8500, which did cost me 200$ less but it's a beautiful device.
I will try the iPhone next month when it arrives here.
Regards,
Saurav
