Anyone know any good software for midi-usb?

I don't know much about midi and all that synthesizer stuff, but I play in a band, and my keyboard doesn't exactly have the best presets, though it is midi-usb so I've been using programs like Pro-53 and connecting the audio from my computer into my amp. So I guess I'm asking if anyone knows any better software with lots of good presets that I can also edit and save, and also where I might find where to learn about synthesis to make my own sounds
