Any suggestions for a European beach holiday that is not devoid of

character and culture? I am looking to go abroad somewhere in Europe, and I'm very much in the mood for sunbathing on the beach and swimming in the sea, but that's not all I want. I'd love to go somewhere that has both a beach and a lively town/city that has some history or something unique about it, or is basically just not completely overrun with other British tourists on package holidays.

Last year I went to Barcelona and was able to absorb myslef in the Spanish culture but it was very tourist friendly in the way of there being lots to do. It was ideal for me, and I'd go there again, but I'd like to explore somewhere else first. Any ideas?
