The post-surgery tips here have been useful for my everyday life, and I use the back-saving tips for around the house, it's strange how everything is written backwarRAB here though! (last reply first, original post last?)

Anyhow, we've been spending a fortune on readymade meals because I'm the cook and it's painful to do anything, least painful is lying down; and worst is bending down to turn on or use the oven (I have burns from rushing through using the oven).

The best thing to cook, for me, requires:

* little preparation especially chopping and putting peels in the bin every 5 minutes etc.
* little dishes - perhaps one frypan or pot
* perhaps emptying several things into a pan and letting it simmer, and serve straight from the pan?
* microwaveable food? (not readymade meals though)

Please offer your recipes to me, I need something easy...desperately!

No other healthy adults in the house? Adults can cook heck I was cooking dinner when I was 11 yr old. Maybe you just are little too accommadating. When I first read your post I thought that you were a single person living on their own. But then when I read it again I realized there are others in your household. Sorry but think you need to explain that you are on sick leave and are leaving the cooking up to the rest. You sure sound like a female cause I can't imagine some guy writing this. Pretty silly to have yourself proclaimed as cook at this time. Believe nobody is going to starve if you don't cook.

I made a lot of crock pot meals. Simple, easy, just throw and dump. I had fun googling recipes and then making them. It sort of helped me in two ways. 1 - it gave me something to do while I was bored, 2 - it was not hard for me to do myself and made me feel like I could at least help with household chores.
Goodluck!

lol you're right i'm a girl
husband can cook, but there is about 3 different things he'll make, and over and over again night after night, I think our health will fade fast.
i deserve to eat a variety of good food, and i guess the only way i can get that is to do it myself.

Hi Sorespine,
I stick to simple things like spaghetti, hot dogs, haraburgers, meatloaf, frozen vegies or bagged salad, etc.

By the way, you can change how the threaRAB appear in your settings. You can change from newest first to oldest first if you want. Click on "my settings" in the blue menu at the top at the left, then go to "settings and options" and then to "edit options." That setting is way down at the bottom.

Hang in there. It will get easier!

:) Emily

Sorry but your post said agonizing pain. If you are in agonizing pain you are usually laying in bed in a sweat unable to get to the washroom or barely speak.

Cooking a meal is not something that anyone can do in that state. Obviously even though you may still have pain it is not of that magnitude.

I took it that you were in an agonizing bedridden state and were struggling without getting any help hence my response. Any family that would expect anything from you while you were in agonizing pain would be a pretty selfish bunch!

Don't think I am being unsympathetic as I have been suffering with back problems for over 40 years and am now permanently disabled. So I do have an idea how things can be hard.

Always sit down when preparing a meal. For me that means sitting down on my walker.

Crockpots are the best and easiest way to cook dinner. Lots of good easy recipes are on the net. You can tear up lettuce and cut up tomatoes ect, throw on some diced cheese, hard cooked eggs, can of tuna or salmon or cooked chicken and you have a meal.

Real easy. Take a inexpensive roast put in crockpot add a can of beef broth and a can of mushroom soup along with one can of water. It will tell you that you have to brown the roast but it can taste just as good unbrowned. Microwave frozen veggies. Either put the potatoes in the crockpot for 1 hr before end of cooking or easier buy some instant mashed potatoes. Hubby can make them instructions on the box.

Hope this helps.

yeh you know i understand what you mean, i was having a hard time when i wrote the post; i used to be bedridden, for around 2 months, but now i have good times and bad times; some days i'll be able to do a lot and i think i overdo it on those days, then there's a few days where i cry a lot or more often i just get depressed from the pain; i always get out of bed every day, though. i might spend a couple of hours, or a few, laying down in bed trying to minimise the pain; every day.

i am still mobile though. sorry for the misunderstanding

I understand & pain is pain, its hard to function period when your in pain. Even when the pain feels tolerable your fearful of overdoing.
I am a lover of the slow cooker (crock pot) so I'll share a couple favorites.

Throw some boneless chicken breasts in an hour or so,
then add some diced tomatoes & diced oinion, pepper, & celery, if you have it on hand. You can add some tomatoes juice or abit of sauce & just let it cook all day. *
You can also just throw in a big can of stewed tomatoes if you dont want to bother with the vegtables.
I cut up extra vegtables & keep them in a container just so I have them.

Another simple one is:
Take boneless pork chops, season with what ever you want, onion powder, bit of pepper & so on..You can add onion if you like.
take some cream of chicken, mushroom or celery & whisk with some milk.
After the chops cook on there own for awhile just pour the soup over top & let simmer for the day.
Both of these dishes go well over rice.

I dont brown my meat before putting it in anymore & it turns out fine.
Of course roast is always a good one to throw in.

you can also layer cabbage top with meat & sauce (much like stuffed cabbage but its a cassarole style) put in layers & just let it cook.
I take tomatoes (diced) & sauce or you can add abit of spaghetti sauce,
Take your ground meat & mix with spices, you can mix just a small amount of rice or even saurkraut in with the meat abit of the sauce & just layer the meat mixture & sauce over the cut up cabbage. Keep layering until the slow cooker is full. My husband cuts up the cabbage for me if I am unable to do so.
I always start these by midmorning & just let it cook for the day. start on high & turn down as the day goes on. All of the above seem to be big hits.
I sometimes cook 2 dishes at time, I have 2 slow cookers & if I am having a good day I will make an extra dinner.
Hope this helps, Sammy
