Any recent movies that will stand the test of time?

I think it was in the recent issue of Empire they had their usual best movies of all time feature. Usually Star Wars and Godfather hog the top spots, but this time Lord of the Rings:FOTR was No.1 :D

Anyway, my friend ( who was pissed that Star wars wasn't No1 again) reckons it's just a fluke and that in a few years no one will really remember the LOTR Trilogy. He mentioned both Gladiator and Titanic, both big Oscar winners and at the time, lauded as some of the greatest movies in recent history. Of course most people now scoff at Titanic as being too mushy and is basically only good for the last 45min.

So will LOTR or any other recent movie still be remembered in 25 years?

if you notice in the boxoffice top ten its all films with special effects ,not that im knocking them i love them all,but i would think that as time passes and technology gets better in effects these films will get beaten by others

A stand-out instant hit (Special FX-lite :)) for me was Leon (Le Proffesional). A beautiful film. Dark yet funny. Sad but heart-warming. Did that get into the top 100 films in Empire?

It deserves to be remembered in 25 years time.

It's always hard to say with these things - I s'pose that there are always going to be what I think of as 'mainstream' classics and then 'critics' classics. This of course is best exemplified in the whole Star Wars / Citizen Kane debate that arrises every ten minutes.
I'd like to think that Fight Club will stand the test of time, along with the Tarantino films and 'The Matrix' which, despite having effects that'll age badly (they ain't looking all that hot now), will be remembered because of their strong, simple stories.
Leon is a beautiful film, and is still sitting pretty in my top 100 films of all time :)

a great film of recent years, because A. everyone loves it, and B. stanRAB up to repeat viewing must be *the dish*.

more one liners than woody allen could shake a fist at...

Iain :D

I don't think the Lord of The Rings Trilogy will be in the same league as Citizen Kane, Jaws, 2001 - A Space Oddysey, Star Wars, The Godfather and The Matrix (and some others) in 5 years time.

It will however be a benchmark for DVD releases for the years to come.

No i think it will personally.

It will be one of those films that will spawn alot of fantasies along the way.....but i doubt they will all beat LOTR! And i doubt theres a film maker out there who will spend 7-10 years or more on a movie ever again.....i hope there is one who will have a daring ambition though.

Actually i change my mind i dont think the LOTR trilogy will actually be included in the "blockbuster" classics, but i think it will be included in the epic Hollywood classics with the Wizard of Oz, King Kong, Gone with the wind, Oliver, Lawrence of Arabia etc.

But theres one thing we cant deny (even if we like the films or not) the LOTR trilogy will forever be apart of Popular culture in years to come! Like it has always been really.

I think of recent times (last 14 years) these films will stand up among the greats...

1. Shawshank Redemption, The (1994)
2. Usual Suspects, The (1995)
3. American Beauty (1999)
4. Se7en (1995)

I think these will be up there/ or i would like to see up there...

1. Schindler's List (1993)
2. Sixth Sense, The (1999)
3. L.A. Confidential (1997)

i have probably forgotten a few but it is half past 12 (am!)

I can't see Titanic being remembered as a classic movie. It is most over hyped rubbish ever. I still don't know how it got the number of Oscars it did.

If it is remembered for anything it will probably be for the oscars it won.

donnie darko is a film i would like to see as one of the greats because its so innovative in its obscurity. but Lost in Translation deserves to be up there as a classic. such a laid back and real film.

The Matrix, the first and best one.

Even though the reputation of this film has suffered due to its sequels, the first still satnRAB out as THE film to beat.

Every sci-fi film released in the next 10 years will be compared to the first Matrix, just like the Terminator films were (apart fom the 3rd one) and Alien(s).

The film is a standard to base opinions upon other sci-fi films.
