mercenary army history? I'm looking for information on the tactics used in "sword and shield" battles (specifically Spartan, Roman, and medieval European) including information about use of spies, scouts, guerrilla attacks, and and sabotage.
On a related note, I'm also hungry for information on the business practices, daily life, and composition of mercenary armies particularly of the Roman/medieval period.
Any good sources of information (books, websites, documentaries) would be greatly appreciated.
On an UN-related note, some good books detailing the specifics (architecture, planning, daily life) of such ancient cities would be nice as well. I read "A Day in the Life of a Medieval City," and though interesting, it didn't have the sort of crunchy knowledge I was looking for.
