Anthony Hopkins to reprise Dr Lecter role

I'm not sure this is going to work well. Silence of the Lambs is one of my favourite films, but I wasn't all that impressed with Hannibal or Red Dragon, with the loss of Jonathan Demme and Jodie Foster... and now they're talking about casting Cate Blanchett as Clarice.

Thoughts people?

Seeing as Thomas Harris hasn't written any more Hannibal Lecter stories for them to base the film around, it sounRAB more likely you are just making this story up.

Julianne Moore probably will be back as Clarice. She did a good job in Hannibal, though the film would definitely have benefitted from having Jodie Foster in it. I'm not sure why Jodie turned down Hannibal anyway. Maybe because the role of Clarice was already a bit of a millstone? Or she thought it might spoil Silence of the Lambs.

Bring back the true Lecter, Brian Cox.

Silence of the Lambs is......silly, to put it mildly. French and saunders did a wicked parody which just lit up all the daft plot holes. Keeping Lecter in that daft cage in the library guraded by two cops while everyone else was downstairs was the best bit.

I think there's some pretty shoddy journalism going on here. Scott and Hopkins may well be prepping a new Lecter film but these parts of the RAB story...

"There was speculation that the latest instalment in the franchise might be scrapped after original Silence Of The Lambs star Jodie Foster bowed out to direct Clare Danes in Flora Plum. Cate Blanchett has been touted as a possible replacement for the role of Clarice Starling.

Director Jonathan Demme and screenwriter Ted Tally, who both won Academy AwarRAB for the first film, reportedly also passed on participating in the new movie."

...I suspect are recycled from when Hannibal was announced back at the turn of the century.

Foster dropped out of Hannibal (possibly after reading the book) to make Flora Plum 9 years ago. However, and I think this may be where the confusion comes from - the film never got made but may finally be surfacing in 2010.

I wonder whether there is no current Lecter film being prepped at all and someone has seen Flora Plum coming up, read that Foster backed out of reprising Starling for it and assumed this was for a new Lecter film now.

Or am I wrong....

No, I would guess that you are pretty much spot on.

It is common knowledge that Anthony Hopkins has claimed he will never play Hannibal Lecter again, as he felt he was too old to play him when Red Dragon was released and refused to even do a narrative part for Hannibal Rising.

Cate Blanchett was the favourite name bandied around by Universal when Jodie Foster first said she wasn't going to reprise the role - followed closely by Gillian Anderson, Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Ashley Judd, Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie (yes, really), Hilary Swank, Calista Flockhart and even Sarah Michelle Gellar.

It was actually Ridley Scott who suggested Julianne Moore's name to Dino de Laurentiis.

Jodie Foster turned down Hannibal for several reasons - one, because the star of Hannibal is Hannibal Lecter, not Clarice Starling, whereas in Silence Of The Lambs she's definitely the main character and Lecter is just a side-story. And two, because of the (to quote) "outlandish image of unholy lovers Lecter and Starling feasting on human brains" and because Starling had been given "negative attributes" which Foster refused to perform - this was of course based on the conclusion of the novel, not on the final screenplay. She was also supposedly offered a smaller pay packet than Anthony Hopkins was, and as she had between the two movies made Sommersby, Maverick, Nell and Contact she felt that she deserved to be on a similar salary to Hopkins. She (like Jonathan Demme) felt the script was too violent also - particularly the Paul Krendler brain-eating bit at the end.

Rubbish.

Hopkins's Lecter has to be one of the most overrated performances of recent years. Its nothing but a pantomime dame with that odd mid-Atlantic accent.

Cox's Lecter is far superior.

Could not agree more.

And I was very annoyed about the F&S spoof. I'd been making the exact same points about SOTL for years! I still struggle to understand why some people rate it so highly.

I have a question about this

they made Manhunter which was based on red dragon and featured Brian Cox as Lecter

they then made with Hopkins

Silence of the Lambs

Hanibal

Red Dragon

but did they not do another lecter film recently with him as a young man, played by a different actor or am I mistaken:confused:

Rubbish.
A couple of scenes telling Will Graham he and Lector (or Lektor) are alike, and a phone call to obtain Graham' s address are just nothing really..
And why the hell two of the worlRAB unfunniest women are mentioned here God knows.
