Anssi Vanjoki says using Android is like peeing in your pants for warmth

They certainly can. HTC is putting their own offline maps app on their new Sense. Should be no issue if Nokia wants to use OVI Maps in Android.

You can always put another standalone maps product on an Android phone. But you cannot take out Google Maps because Google Maps by itself is also a software platform. Many Android apps that use geolocation uses Google Maps. As a matter of fact, you cannot divorce Google Maps from the iPhone itself too, for the same reason why iPhone apps that use geolocation also uses Google Maps.

Likewise, in our hypothetical Nokloid, there is no reason why Nokia cannot put OVI Mail and other OVI cloud services into it. For example, in the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, in addition to GMail, the phones also have SE's own mail service, Moxi. Samsung has their own Android application store.

Of course, tech bloggers will say that is "fragmenting" Android. Certainly has the potential for it if Nokia and Blackberry decides to go Android, it will create large polar moments of inertia, Google will have a much more difficult time managing the "center".

Great analogy, although very unprofessionaly sounding.

Android on a Nokia would be the sound of Nokia shooting themselves in the foot. Will not and should not happen.

I would not buy an Android phone from them - I'd go cheap and get a cruddy build quality piece from HTC or a bad UI but OK hardware Motorola unit instead :)

My unbranded Motorola Milestone came with "motoNav" (Motorola's navigation system). I have g-mail on my Nokia N95. If Nokia succumbed to Android, they can still continue with their ill-fated "Comes with Music" or whatever other "service" they want to sell, that they think they'll lose if the go away from Symbian.

After all, aside from embarrassment, the only other reason they cling to Symbian is the software "eco-system" they have built around it. Apple has their iStore (or whatever), Google makes money on advertising via Gmaps, Gmail, etc. and Nokia tries to do things like "Comes with music" "Ovi Store" "Nokia Maps", but has just been throwing good money after bad with these ventures like some gambler who thinks his next bet will make him rich.

If Nokia jumps on Android, their hardware will sell alot better than a few years ago when the OS was less relevant, and they can still try their software projects (maps, music, etc.) inside of Android with less risk than if they put all their eggs in the Symbian basket. I honestly like Nokia, but as many others, don't understand why they stick to their losing game-plan...

Nokia has been in a declining pattern since the N97 came out. Each quarter, the profit margins keep going down faster than a falling stone. At the same time, Sony Ericsson, HTC, Motorola and Samsung are seeing rises in smartphone sales.

Example. Last year, Samsung sold, for the entire year of 2009, around 6 million smartphones of all kinds.

This year, from June to the end of August, in 3 months, Samsung sold 3 million Galaxy S alone. That's one phone of one type.

The problem of Symbian^3 or Meego, is that I don't see how they differentiate themselves in any form of ability over Android, and I'm not talking about Froyo, but subsequent variants like Gingerbread, Honeycomb, etc,. An OS is an OS, all OS does the "OS" things.

Services are what differentiate OSes now. The problem with Nokia, services are subpar.

Services have everything to do with it.

The problem of Nokia, like LG, is that they think you can get away selling cute devices alone on a cute marketing campaign. The new world, the new markets say that is no longer the case.

You want to sell in the US. You need to offer services.

I understand the reason why Nokia can't move to android for public perception. But honestly what would happen if Nokia make only 2 android high end phones and stopped after this year? Would the "universe" really collapse? Or would they maybe sell a bunch of top end phones?

As a symbian ex fan boy I know how crazy it is to say this. But we know the geek world would buy such a device in droves with Nokia's hardware. And since Nokia still is selling to masses, they would buy it too just the same.

It's more of a psychological or ego / defeated issue more than anything else.

That's why many of us have either moved on to Android or spitting time with Android.

BUT... Nokia owners or previous Nokia owners (as a whole) aren't "Brand Brainwashed" like Apple Fanbois.

They may leave but they will come back. It's ridiculous to buy a phone just because of the name on the back. The name should only be a tie-breaker.

Apple's next phone could be exactly like the 3Gs with the same crappy signal, battery, but fanbois would still buy it because of the NAME (and the new feature of not having an external antenna).

Android is the "waiting around bandage" for previous or current Nokia owners. It's still far from perfect which is why I only use it half the time.

If MeeGo delivers then Nokia will gain a lot of people back. In the mean time Nokia NEEDS (which they are doing) to ignore Android completely, and put all their time and effort into building a better foundation (MeeGo) for the future.

I slam Nokia only for their delays and (lack of) support, but I give them nothing but praise and credit for their hardware and NOT selling out to the robot... :buddies:

I've owned EVERY major brand of cell phone at one point or another (including LG).

With that said not one day has ever gone by that I thought that Nokia (especially the e-series) was a cute little selling device.

It's been the opposite, my e71/72 for example has been nothing but a workhorse that I just can't live without for work right now...

Would the universe collapse? No

Would it be a bad idea? IMO YES!

Sure Ego comes into play, but it's much more than that.

Nokia doesn't have enough time to work on Symbian alone (especially supporting it) plus they are trying to find time to get MeeGo up and going to be shipped out. (And we are also assuming that they are going to support it)

When would they have time for Android? Even as a side project it would be a mess IMO.

Let's say they make a new phone called the N99 with Froyo. By the time they get it out, Gingerbread would be right around the corner.

There's no way that they would be able to find time to port Gingerbread. They can't even find time to get the N97 up to 3.0.

I totally understand where you are coming from, but IMO it would be OVERLOAD!...

They may not sell out to the robot as you say but they are going to buddy up with old Billy Gates and Stevie Ballmer, so what is worse??????? Unless it would be Stevie Jobs AKA god!!!!!!!

How can you not see that it's a total waste of time from an engineering effort? They need to bring a team up to speed on Android, a team that needs to be working on MeeGo. The product is launched into a market flooded with Androids and becomes just another "Droid". And then all of the people that bought it would ***** because it didn't get Gingerbread/Honeycomb/IceCream? It's an unnecessary diversion that Nokia doesn't need. For all the people *****ing about Nokia not upgrading their devices I see the same thing from Android users complaining that their devices aren't getting upgrades. Look at all the poor saps still at 1.5 and 1.6 that don't have a prayer for an upgrade.

Whether Android, MS, or Crapple it is stupid IMO for Nokia to get sidetracked.

IMO It should ONLY be the Symbian and MeeGo show but whatever.

We'll see what happens...

Typical response what a intelligent person!!! Stick with your Nokia at least I was smart enough to quit throwing away money on NOKIA!!! What is your excuse!!!!!

In all the time I spent on this forum I could always count on some real drivel from you!!! I am out of here no need to waste my time here with this bunch!!!

What does my device of choice have to do with the fact that Nokia is not adopting WP7? And I didn't throw money away on my current device. It was free.

dude, no...

they need to focus on the touch based s40, the symbian^3 move to symbian^4, and the coming meego barrage....
messing w/ Android would be a distraction....
SE and Samsung have no immediate plans for symbian, we'll see if that is still the case at the beginning of 2012...

That's more Apple and Oranges... A "Flagship" phone like the N97 has been out forever and users are sitting around waiting for v3.

For you personally, how long have you waited for your BT issue to be fixed on the e72? How long should users wait for a simple 7/8 shorcut fix on the same device?

As for Android... Look at some of the hottest Android phones, Galaxy S, Desire, and Droid. The first two should be caught up to Froyo by the end of next month at the latest. Droid already got eclair and Froyo this year.

"Saps" on 1.5/1.6 will probably top out at Eclair and some have devices that are going to struggle past cupcake. It's almost like an old computer trying to run Windows 7.

Bottom Line... I still love Nokia and want them to do well (both currently and with MeeGo), but their timing and support blows...

Numbers don't tell the whole story. Sony Ericsson had to lay off over 3000 employees to start turning a profit again, HTC floods the market with the same Android phone with subtle differences every month after years of primarily making Windows Mobile devices (around 2 per year), before the Droid/Milestone, Motorola hadn't produced a new phone for 26 months (except in China) and Samsung's previous smartphones were limited to 2 Symbian devices and 4 Windows Mobile 6.x devices. Obviously these companies are going to see sales increases because they're actually making more smartphones. Meanwhile, Nokia's sales are increasing YoY and they're producing LESS devices than in previous years.

Numbers don't tell the whole story because you can twist em anyway you want.
