Anssi Vanjoki says using Android is like peeing in your pants for warmth

I was thinking about this the other day..
so many folks left in the wayside as the companies move forward to eclair and froyo....
when gingerbread hits there will be utter calamity everywhere..
people talked noise about Nokia, but that grass is looking a lil' pail in the Android pasture....

I was only talking upgrades, not updates, from one version of Symbian to the next. We know all too well how long it can take for updates to come out for bug fixes let alone pushing to a newer version of Symbian/Android whatever and then fixing all the bugs that showed up in the upgrade. Why throw Android into that mix just to slow things down with Symbian/MeeGo?

What timing, this was gonna be my very next post. Meego has certainly caught my interest. But switching to android its won me over by a good margin. I see the symbian 3 or 4 home screen / widget setup and layout and it does not interest me even slightly. Even worse is that android and HTC build quality of the nexus won has made me personally quite a huge fan where I'm not so sure I'll switch back so easily. HTC really has impressed the hell out of me and I'm not so sure its a good move on Nokia's part to even push people away from Nokia phones even a little bit. Now I've tried the competition and It's grabbed me quite a bit.

No matter how good the n8 is with camera hardware my mind is already made up sticking with android when seeing the symbian 3 home screen and widget layout. Meego however interests me quite a bit.

But I gotta say one go with the superb build quality of the HTC nexus and it twisted my head all up as an ex Nokia fan boy. I'm not so sure I'll just switch right back!

It comes back to the timing issue. Sure Meego is coming and might be great. But android too will be updated 2 more versions then as well so it may not be so clear cut of a choice.

This industry turned to cut throat seemingly over night and missing even one day can hurt you, and Nokia has missed a couple years!

As someone who loves using their nexus one, I don't think android is the future and I don't think it'd be a good idea for nokia to adopt it now.

It seems like all the manufacturers making phones with it are using it as a temporary stepping stone before they cross the river with their own software in the future...HTC with sense, motorola mentioned they would not always be using android and samsung's got bada.

When they didn't have comparable OSes to the iphone, it was easy for them to adopt android...it doesn't make any sense for nokia to do the same when they've got meego brewing.

Upgrades with both are slow, but IMO NOKIA is slower.

I threw the update thing in there only because NOKIA is too time strapped for something as minor as updates as it is that's all.

We both definitely agree Android on Nokia would clog up the works and screw up what they are currently trying to build...:)

^ The camera may not mean that much to you, but if you look in the N8 thread there are former Nokia users that are waiting to threw money down on that device.

We'll see what the final version of Meego compares to Froyo/Gingerbread and beyond. I'm very excited to see the final list of new features and comparisons in '11...

Android has done in the last 2 years what Nokia/Symbian failed to do in the last 10, and that's to create a unified mobile OS that people are excited about and mfgs support. If Android becomes the Windows of phones, that's a good thing in my view, and doesn't take anything away from the mfg. If you buy a Windows laptop, you still differentiate between an Acer, Dell or HP right? And for profits, ask HTC and Motorola how they are doing with Android.

I don't see why Nokia adopting Android would be bad for them in any way. Except for the fact that Nokia dumped nearly a billion dollars into Symbian and I guess would be a little red in the face to ditch that for something that Google gave them for free ;)

I agree with ccrows in post #37. Nokia fans such as myself may jump to another platform or device manufacturer, but will always look to come back. It is almost like the Nokia delays encourage this activity....I'll probably see how the Captivate works out..but if N8 or N9 gets rave reviews..I'll put down the Captivate as quickly as getting it and jump back to Nokia

If Nokia had Android I would have waited. But after having this Captivate for a week or so and rooting/unrooting/messing with the OS and going back to stock,,,I cannot imagine going back to Symbian.

The Samsung is that good. HW aside. Who really needs more than 5MP "snapshots" The pixel count is getting ridiculous not to mention the storage required or the auto upload data usage to wherever.

Was worth giving up UL $15 data plan as I never used more than 10MB in any month and am averaging 5MB a day playing with this phone.

HTC here has a one year half price for text and data..$12.50 buys 2GB Since HTC owns all the GSM towers here ATT rents them. So we have a choice to go with ATT or HTC ATT. Only the billing is changed from ATT to HTC, same service same everything except when out of town one cannot go to an ATT store for issues. But I may have gone three times in 15 years or so with ATT/Cingular/ATT ....

I think the Captivate will make inroads into Apple's territory. Verizon won't need Apple with the Droid. These guys are an IPhone on steroids.

With all that's on their plate when would they have time to implement it and especially port new versions of Android?

It would be nothing short of a rushed/abandoned project...
