Anssi Vanjoki resigns from Nokia

Sorry but I have to disagree. Only people buying their first computer ask me whether to buy a Windows or a Mac. Those that have more experience always ask what brand to buy. Reason is, once you become fast with an OS you don't want to go through the basics again. So, the brands will always have small but meaningful differences to customers.

Same is happening with cell phones. Once this wave of new Android users is ready to buy a new phone in 2012, they are not gonna be asking which OS to buy. Only Apple people don't have to worry about the brand.

To say that Apple's strategy was right is to ignore history. They were first to market with a friendly GUI, but had to take money from the copy cat to stay alive. Jobs excels at understanding what people want, but he sucks at the business end. Once he gets too thin to think, Apple will have a hard time maintaining their religion. Sorry, the PC won that war.

It's not just ego. By making an Android phone, they are basically letting Google dictate what they do with their software. I'm sorry but if you believe that Android is truly open-source then you're an idiot. Nothing about it would be advantageous to Nokia because they could put out a device that runs Android tomorrow but you lose out on all of their services (I know the smart-asses among you will applaud this) but I personally wouldn't trade Ovi Maps for Google Maps.

So they're not asking you if they should get a Mac or a Packard Bell? A Mac or an IBM? A Mac or a Lenovo?

The PC won which war? What are the profit margins on PCs that IBM ships? Profit margins for Apple computers are above industry average. IBM invented the PC and got squeezed out of its product category years ago.

First of all, thanks for raising the possibility that I am an idiot. We all are at times, some more often than others.

Second, the degree of open sourceness(c) has nothing to do with why it would be a good business decision for Nokia to go green. When you get blindsided twice like they did by Apple and Google, you can't be choosy on how you gonna make money. You make it any way you can. If everybody else is happy enough making money with Android, what's stopping Nokia? They can still keep their pet projects going.

Third, refusing to make money because you don't want others dictating to you is an ego problem. There is no absolutes, someone is always gonna be holding somebody else's balls. As long as the grip is not too tight and you're still making money, why let philosophical issues interfere with business?

There is no religion in business, Apple is wrong again and Google will play Microsoft this time around.

What?!??? This is GREAT news!! I've been callig for this for almost 2yrs now. Good riddance to top execs who get overpaid and don't really do shite!! Anybody know exactly what he does for Nokia what efforts does he really pull into the company? Every boring presentation he's been in had someone else deliver more of the meat of the event and more knowledge of what the event was about. he never earned nor deserved to be top dog.

That dude, Mike Evans has done more work, harder work, more knowledgeable of what his job entails and better interacts with the community of S60 fans than this joker.

Yea he was memorable. What was his job title in 2010 "Rodeo Clown"? :befuddled

Hmmmm Paul Allen & Steve Wozniak immediately come to mind as silent mice... :mod:

Ummmm of course Apple does. Let's see they are the only ones that make Apple products, and everyone knows that the money is to be made in the software not the hardware. Why do you think Microsoft never came out with their own PC? The closest they came out of their comfort zone was the XBOX (and the Zune) and only because they knew they could make bank on the video game software/DC.

Really the only exception to the hardware rule was the iPod/iPhone since those products put Apple back on the map but they still made bank off of the apps/services like iTunes ETC...

LOL. As a matter of fact, people are complaining that Google has been far too lenient; letting Verizon put Bing into the Samsung Captivate, Yahoo Search on the Motorola Backflip; letting handset makers produce one UI layer after another to differentiate their products; makers like Samsung and Motorola producing their own Android app stores. Note how the Chinese are forking their own Android versions and installing Android beyond Google's hardware guidelines.

In fact, people have been arguing that Google needs to kick more *** and start being dictatorial.

You have to let Google be evil once in a while and be dictatorial so you can control Android fragmentation. Android remains remarkably consistent despite the huge variety of devices that has sprung up.

Compared to what? Nokia's model? The only reasonable app store for Symbian is OVI Store. Except OVI works only for Nokia phones, not for the Symbian S60 phones that Samsung or Sony Ericsson makes. Now Samsung has stopped making Symbian phones and Sony Ericsson has gone out to say they will emphasize Android. This is one reason why Symbian Foundation has very little credibility with Asian handset makers as an "open" platform. OVI has done much to hurt the cause of Symbian as an open platform. OVI Maps work on SE and Samsung Symbian handsets? Not by default, not without hacking. Oh, on these handsets, they probably end up using Google's.

To get Android Market, which is the tool Google uses to keep Android from fragmenting, you need:

1. ) The handset maker needs to join the Open Handset Alliance. It helps to know you're here for keeps, that you're a branded entity and not some fly by night operation.

2.) That your device must conform to a strict set of hardware guidelines, which is to ensure that as much as possible, the apps will work on the device.

You see why Android Market is not in many cheap Chinese Android tablets for these two reasons. They have to download their apps old school style, which is no problem because Android as standard allows browser downloads and installs from SD cards.

The way I see it, if Nokia adopts Android in theory, they might end up what Samsung and HTC is doing, which is putting their own UIs, and then like Motorola and Samsung is doing, add their own app stores.

Seeing the past record in Nokia, I got little faith they know how to manage a platform successfully. Despite being highly self integrated, Nokia has managed to fragment Symbian S60 by its own.

Paul Allen no longer works for Microsoft and Woz no longer works for Apple. They're co-founders and I'm sure they still have some kind of influence but it's not the same thing.

I've decided to never buy an HP again with the way they handled the tx1000 and not recalling that POS, but only recalling afew models that do have the same issue with the nvidia 6xxx chipset deballing itself and not admitting that a problem exists.

Your argument holds no weight. There's nothing keeping SE or Samsung for making their own application suites. These companies simply weren't interested. Also, besides allowing OEM to change the default search engine from Google to Bing or Yahoo and adding superfluous UI skins, tell me exactly where Google is being lenient?

Anssi's going to be missed because he was one of the few executives that I met where you could *feel* his passion about Nokia, mobility, and the like. I saw the man speak on several occasions, and you couldn't *not* be enthralled - it's different from Steve Jobs - Jobs is a marketer - he makes you want what he's selling. Vanjoki exudes passion from his core - he made you believe that he believed what he was saying to the core of his being, and made you want to be a part of that.

That being said, once my initial shock and sadness passed, I realized this could only be good for Nokia. As others have already said, clearly they need new blood - those that have been in charge for the past few years have had their chances, and consistently blown those chances. It's time to give someone else a shot. That, and again, as mentioned, he was most likely gunning for the CEO position, and when passed over, pretty much *had* to leave - if not, there would always be a level of tension between him and Elop, and that's not conducive to progress.

It sucks that Nokia is going to lose such a passionate employee, but I think, in the long run, it's for the best.

There really should be a forum section dedicated to Android vs. iOS vs. Symbian vs. WM7, it is such a heated debate. Now back the the original topic, does anyone know why Anssi Vanjoki is leaving? Or is he being pushed out, did he find another job.

Anssi Vanjoki is slated as a speaker at Nokia world starting tomorrow, is he still going to speak? I would imagine that Nokia wouldn't want him to, how would he be able to brag about their new up coming products. Anything that he would be said would be turned to rubbish.

The fact that Google doesn't force any Android maker to exclude Bing or Yahoo. That makes a big difference. Google doesn't exclude Yahoo or Baidu search apps in the Android Market. If the OEM is the one making the restrictive changes, it's the OEM, not Google doing this.

I'm not talking about application suites. I'm talking about an application store. There is no effective store for all Symbians, including non Nokias. OVI is Nokia only. Instead of having an App store for all Symbian, you created an app store for Nokia only. If you force SE or Samsung to produce their own app stores for their Symbian phones, you're increasing platform fragmentation.

Oh and now lets talk about all the other OVI apps, such as Maps and so on. If SE and Samsung make their own Symbian phone suite, that also hastens platform fragmentation even more. Top it more with UI and internal app differences. At least no matter what Android brand you're using, you're at least using Google Maps.

Every little clue suggests Nokia simply doesn't know how to manage a platform.

There is a whole bunch of people that needs to be eliminated from the ranks of Nokia. I think its easier to name the exceptions, like Mary McDowell, who is now trying to lead the US effort and is the person behind the E71/E63 product.

if the N8 and E7 don't suck, that there is your "2 straight devices that don't suck" (paraphrasing) that you said would bring you back to doing symbian guru, right?
