From my point of view....... the PR failure is on the part of Make A
Wish for trying to embarass her for not indulging their charity.

What if it were an organization that helped women getting abortions, or
one that tried to prevent abortions. While some celebrities are
outspoken enough that they would be willing to step in and help, I am
sure than most would rather not get involved and not have to deal with
the PR fallout.

The one who needs to be fired is the person at Make A Wish who outed her
for not helping them. Charity is not about making a big deal about what
you do.

Nuts to that. No one should be expected knuckle under to shakedown.

it's one thing for make a wish to arrange for drips to Disneyland,or
some other kid tourist spot, a business that would benefit from such a
jester, but even then it should be within reason. There are lots of kid
dying and they might have trouble coping with large numbers of them
arriving.

In this case, they targetted an individual. She i a celebrity, but sill
an individual. I have to admit that I question whether it was really the
kid's choice but that is irrelevant to my disgust over their outing her
for not indulging them. While some people are threatening to boycott
her for not indulging Make A Wish, my reaction is quite different. I
would never support a charity that acts like that.

Neither my husband nor I have ever gone hunting (just fishing and
crabbing and such), none of our children have ever gone. However, our
four year old has expressed many times that he wants to go hunting. He
knows that meat comes from animals, and he wants to go be a part of
that. Our older boys have expressed that wish as well. They all go to
the real butcher with me and they helped pick out the steer we put in
the freezer while he was in the field.

And if that were the case, I'd expect them to explain that they
weren't looking for that kind of publicity when the organization put
them on a list of people who wouldn't help (both sides do this) or
firmly put their support behind the other side, if it was ideologically
driven.

She can't get many requests from six year olds. Especially those
with leukemia. She or her PR folks couldn't clear an afternoon?

I don't really care if she could clear an afternoon or not. They
contacted a celebrity and were politely turned down. They contacted her
a second time. No charity should be publicly embarrass celebrities to
coerce them into supporting them.

It would be interesting to find out the real story, from both sides. She
may not even know she turned them down.

One also has to wonder what the 6 year old was thinking. He may think she
is a lady down the street and they can get together in 15 minutes. Given a
choice, he may prefer going out for ice cream and be just as happy. Either
way, it is not good publicity for anyone. .

It's a false statement anyway. I believe the indicator is
deliberate, repeated cruelty to animals which can escalate to treating
humans that way. Man has killed beast since the beginning of time
without resorting to violence against his fellow man and vegans and
vegetarians have perpetrated violence, which would seem out of place
since they don't harm animals.

I think it's up to the parent or other custodial adult to try to
identify whether the child's interest in animal violence is pathological
or harmless. It is not sufficient, in my view, to simply assume just
because they are interested in "hunting" and (part of) society accepts
hunting, that everything is still a-okay. There could be some pathology
behind it.

Note that many normal children develop no interest in hunting.
