Anime Podcast Talkback (Possible Spoilers, Some Podcasts Linked to May Be PG-13+)

Let's try to cut back on posting links without discussion, shall we? Just like in the abridged series thread, the idea here is DISCUSSION, not PROMOTION, so please don't post a link unless you've got something to say about it.

But yes, Episode 8 was a challenge because it's such a broad topic that it's easy to go on tangents, and at the end of the session I felt like we still hadn't covered half of what we might have.

Maybe that just means we should bring it back for another go sometime... but maybe I should wait and see how the audience reaction is before I say that. (-:
 
Episode 8 was great, although I am still recovering from my uneasyness of episode 7 (I disagreed with you guys a lot during ep 7 , and you guys got wa----y too out of control with your hatred, especially Kaiser)!!


Anyway I hope you keep the podcast going guys, and Kaiser isn't the only stickler with pronunciation !!


And when I debut as a manga artist I will bring back some of the old tropes, and I will also take the tropes and use them as objects like Slayers did!!
 
Episode #0155 (Length: 71:12).

This week, Mike, Meri, and Jeff go over volume 22 of the Dragonball Manga, Jeff being the only one having never read the Manga before. Discussion seems to point to the trio favoring this volume over the previous as Vegeta--his usual bad self--runs around Namek causing grief for Freeza and his men. Also, Mike and Meri discuss the trailer to Dragonball: Evolution and their feelings toward the film. Well worth the check out.

I've been keeping up with DaizenshuuEX since pretty much the begining and this was another fascinating episode as the Manga Review of Awesomeness leapt into the thick of the Freeza/Namek arc.
 
Yeah, I know. There were loaRAB of tropes I remerabered AFTER the podcast was recorded. But we can still do a follow-up session in the near future. And yeah, sorry rabroadi - I'll be sure to mention some more in-depth material with the link. ^^;
 
Oh man, going through DaizenshuuEX episodes I missed initially, #0104 is hilarious. The whole gang watched the Chinese live action Dragonball film and commented...whille being completely plastered.
 
I have to disagree with The Counterpoint's view of Gundam 00. May I ask how far into it you've watched? Because I'm up to date and I can't see the show as recyling diluted versions of the Wing pilots. 00 has actually well rounded characters. Wing just had waifs that angsted on cue.
 
Agreed. I'm surprised that you called 00's characters flat considered that I love the show because of many of the characters. I also ask how far you've gotten. Code Geass, I can understand.
 
I essentially agree with you and HellCat about 00, but I have to admit that it took me a while to get into the characters during the first season. By the time the later half, the finale and the second season rolled around that wasn't a problem, but I can understand why that might be an issue early on due to first impressions. I'd just advise them to give 00 another chance.

By the way, from what I understood the comment about Code Geass had to do with the characters "looking bland", right after mentioning that the 00 crew was also "looking pretty" (or pretty-looking), so that was seemingly mostly about the designs. Which, evidently, is a trait shared by both shows to a large extent.

Not to mention that I would also dare to argue that the characters in Code Geass, particularly during the first season -which is yet another curious reversal when comparing the show to 00-, aren't that "flat" at all, but to each his own.
 
Decided to check out Counterpoint. I enjoyed it, I think I'll go back and see the earlier ones.

Seems the Gundam 00 issue has been addressed, so I won't echo the criticism there or go out of the way to defend Wing either. I'm glad it was at least acknowledged as being rather mature, certainly compared to other series that were on Toonami and elsewhere.

Something I really appreciated was the group's defense of Avatar, which as near as I can tell is a perfectly good cartoon that gets a bad rap from some fans that see it as some kind of rip-off. I think that's a very unfortunate attitude. Anime has fans because it is so often better than animation from elsewhere, but that doesn't mean people should be cutting themselves off from American cartoons. That said, I do agree that some shows try too hard to show off tropes. For better or worse Teen Titans does have that, and I suffered through a few minutes of Totally Spies once...yeah. There it's very obvious and it doesn't help.

I also liked the acknowledgement of older dubs, which I feel are often underrated by people. I do, however, want to establish a clear difference between the Robotech dub and the Voltron dub. Robotech Americanized Macross and did a rather faithful and mature job all things considered, I'm in full agreement with the group on that. Robotech's Macross story puts the fundamental Macross story on full display. As far as I know, none of the show's issues or tragedies were edited out in any way. On the other hand Voltron, while successful, went far out of its way to tone down Go-Lion into something that was kid-friendly and very innocuous. So while we can agree on that "Grandfather Clause," I do think it should be said that there's a considerable difference in quality between Robotech and certain other early dubs that could be arguably described as "hack dubs."

Episode 9 will be greatly welcomed whenever it does come out, but at least this was something new, and I look forward to more of these reviews in the future. I've never heard of Akikan before, but it seemed like a good review anyway. I'll try to think of some good anime for you to review in the future. My only question is... why weren't you on it, Mynd?
 
AWO is great, probably my favourite podcast. They review the more obscure shows, and they really know their stuff. Daryl Surat is a pretty funny guy too, even if he can be a bit obnoxious.

Dave And Joels Fast Karate for the Gentlemen is a good show too. Its immature, but they're pretty funny; they mainly talk about the bloody oav's of the late 80s and early 90s
 
Whatever happened to the Anime Counterpoint? It hasn't been updated for awhile and I'm getting the feeling that like a lot of good stuff on the internet, it's been abandoned.
 
I don't exactly know why the thread died along with Kaiser's old podcast, but I think there's plenty of ripe discussion on the anime podcasting community. Along with the abridged series talkback on the forum, I think it would be a cool idea to have an active talkback for the many podcasts out there (and not just mine) dedicated to your favorite anime series. Whether they're official or unofficially hosted, you can, and should, discuss it here (with permission from Funkatron).

Just listened to the "One Piece Podcast's special episode guest starring Tsukento of "Top 10 worst One Piece Dub Moments" fame and what do they talk about in today's episodes? He FINALLY finishes his top ten moments in this episode. I say that it was nice to get Tsu on the podcast, and I do hope you guys get him to be a semi-regular on the series.

Actually glad to get his reason behind why Laboon and Little Garden was cut, and how important it is to the plot of the story, didn't really notice the log post/grand compass thing myself.
