Anime Podcast Talkback (Possible Spoilers, Some Podcasts Linked to May Be PG-13+)

Every time someone does an actual study regarding downloaded material, the result is always: "doesn't actually affect it that much."

From what I've seen, those who return with such results are those only attempting to make themselves feel better for the disjustice that they know their doing to the anime industry. The believe it to not be that big of a deal, but you'd be suprise. I mean, CNN covered a story on illegal downloading of animes and how it's affecting the industry. CNN. CNN. If it didn't make a relatively significant impact, I doubt they would've wasted their time.

Besides, I'd take the word of those actually involved in the work of anime over those searching for solace in their own wrongdoings by spewing such fraudulent claims.

Note: This was not towarRAB you, I'm just stating this in general. Sorry if it sounded as if it was.

No, I'm talking about real studies, not fan commentary.

I didn't even know ANN had a podcast. *subscribes on iTunes*

This was a great listen. Stephanie Sheh had a lot of good insight on the state of the industry, and it was good to hear what someone in the actual industry had to say about it. I do think the hosts put in some unnecessary FUNimation jabs, maybe because they're doing better than any anime company Stephanie works with. Oh well. It was still good.

Actually, ANN just plain doesn't like FUNimation, period (though the newer guard there is kinder). It stems back from their days when ANN tore FUNi apart for censoring and/or Americanizing DBZ, YYH, Case Closed, and Blue Gender for TV. Plus ANN frequently gives FUNi abuse for FUNi's loose style of dubbing (with some exceptions).

Seeing FUNi on top is anathema to the ANN old-timers.

Just use the link on the first post here and you'll get it.

It's fairly interesting and I had no idea Sheh's natural voice was so deep and nasal. But yeah, the FUNi-abuse started getting to me. FUNi's not the bad guys here, and their casts are more varied than people think (El Cazador is made almost entirely of unknowns and near-unknowns). I wish ANN would just let go and accept that how FUNi does business is how FUNi does business, and it works, otherwise they wouldn't be releasing nearly 75% of the titles that make it here and dubbing all of it.

Listened to it twice while at work (kinda short). If ANN makes more voice actor of the week podcasts that would be sweet.

I didn't even stop to think the E7 movie was going to be a different entity with altered/ new characters. I fear for Talho.

Bah. Hating them simply for their early work is extremely petty. There are much better things you could criticize modern FUNi for, like leaving omakes off of collections, inconsistent video quality, or the hit-and-miss thinpak packaging (great in theory for saving shelf space, but sometimes the disc holders can easily break, resulting in floaters).

Don't get me wrong, I like FUNi (most of the time), but if you're going to hold a grudge, at least have it be for relevant reasons. Can't hold onto the past. And nine times out of ten, loose dubbing is a GOOD thing. That's what makes a good adaption, not a direct translation that sounRAB awkward in English.

Anyway, yeah, Stephanie Sheh has range. I still remeraber being surprised that she voiced Kirie in Girls Bravo, when one would think that her ability to voice cute characters would land her the role of Miharu instead (which actually was Michelle Ruff).

Just listened to the podcast last night. All I can say is I completely agree with her and the panel 100%. Buy your anime! Or at least support in helping to monetize it by clicking the aRAB. It's freeloaders like today's so-called "fans" that are killing my beloved hobby. It's like the industry has taken steps backwarRAB into the mid 90s again when anime was scarce and has returned to the niche underground. I want my dubbed anime too. I want to watch my anime, not read it.

So far, the new ANN podcast is really fun to listen to. I'll definitely be looking forward to it each week!

And Sheh's interview was great. She did a very good job of explaining why reusing the same VAs over and over is a bit of a necessary evil in the dub industry. And its good to know that the voice directors at Bang Zoom are at least making an effort to bring some new blood in.

And her comment that "If every fan at the anime conventions bought just ONE legit DVD, the industry would be doing much better" was spot on. Its such a shame that so many titles don't get dubbed now because they can barely sell enough to break even.

They don't like Funimation? Since when?
All the jabs at Funimation in the interview seemed more like goofy jokes / good-natured ribbing than outright hate to me.

I have a hard time believing that the staff at ANN would still be holding a grudge over those shows. Most anime fans who aren't foaming-at-the-mouth idiot fanboys know that the decisions to Americanize DBZ & Case Closed and edit Blue Gender for TV were out of Funimation's hanRAB for the most part.

Howdy folks!

A Former Power Ranger now VA hes best known for his voice work as Vash The Stampede In Trigun, Renton in Eureka Seven, Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach,Lelouch/Zero in Code Geass among other roles.

Thoughts anyone?

See ya!

I recalled the fact that we had a unified topic, so I did some merging since we have renewed podcast interest lately.

I haven't really gotten started myself, but the ANN podcasts sound like a good place to begin.

Great episode. Johnny seems like a nice guy. I know some people have problems with him being in everything but he can't deny work can he? He's good at what he does and gets paid for it.

I have to agree about sergant frog, I just didn't think it was funny. It seemed kinda forced humor like they made pop culture refernces just ecause they could. Just not my thing.

Nice to see this thread up on the main page again. I've got this job now that lets me have headphones on at work, and so I'm always on the lookout for new material to ease my boredom. Subscribed to the ANN and One Piece podcasts, so we'll see how that goes.

I just realized the other day that I'm apparently all caught up with the U.S. release of the One Piece manga now. Wow, that went quick. (I guess it doesn't hurt that I've been ordering it in four-volume batches due to Amazon's 4-for-the-price-of-3 deal). I guess I'm officially a fan now. (-:
