Anime Expo 2009 Talkback

Glad to hear Lisa Ortiz, Eric Stuart, Veronica Taylor and Crispin Freeman are back. Also, Mike Sinterniklaas will now be the voice of Xellos, replacing David Moo, but from what I've heard, most fans wouldn't complain about that. He's also the ADR director, so I'm guessing the dub itself is at NYAVPost. Dragon Ball's set being confirmed was no surprise, considering we even had a trailer leaked.

More like CN Fail. I'm not a Naruto fan and even I'm mad at this news. Why is Cartoon Network so obsessed with having good ratings in one demographic even if it does well in another? Teen Titans, Megas XLR, Justice League, and now Naruto is a casulty of the "ratings were good, but not good enough" mentality. I honestly can't think of a reason why anyone over the age of 10 should watch Cartoon Network anymore. Just like I said to Code Geass fans, I suggest putting money where you mouth is, show the channel they screwed up, and buy their merchandise.

Thank you, Funimation. Is it still scheduled for release on Septeraber 15?

And was anything said about Dragonball Movie 1's release?

FUNimation's got a vBlog of 'Day 0' up on their YouTube page. I think it's hosted by Rojas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT0MZT2nqFc&fmt=35

If Funi announced an english dub for the Lupin III Vs Detective Conan OVA. I would be the happiest man alive!

I would also like to see some more info on Soul eater

fromViz mabye a TV deal For Shippuden, and somthing Toryama related. Like a full US release of the Neko Majin manga! that would be great!

(& mabye a dub of New Dr.Slump)

bandai. don't know new series i guess.

Honestly, it's best to just drop trying to get Anime on TV. The times've change. Streaming is exploding right now and FUNimation and Viz have made their commitments to their mega properties, despite a simple home video release. All our energies should be on supporting those channels before...the television channel channels...

Here's a live blog of the panel on online distribution. Elsewhere, ANN describes the state of the industry speech given by Rightstuf's Shawne Kleckner.
EDIT: Whoa, even better, here's a transcript of Kleckner's speech.

Sengoku Basara is not something I can get very worked up about. The good news is that it's a long summer for news.

Couldn't disagree more. It's all well and good to support legal streaming, but I don't see why attempts still shouldn't be made at TV deals. There is and ought to be life besides Cartoon Network. It may take some time, but there's no reason to outright give up on television.

I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but hopefully this is where Funimation clarifies the "Dragon Ball Season 1" situation one way or the other. It's pretty much a given that the release is legit, but I think that people who attend Anime Expo are going to want answers (with the One Piece streaming thing, now being "secondary", IMO). Why did FUNi lie about the Wal-Mart listing being false (the Anime Next rep not knowing about it isn't an excuse)? What kind of deal have they worked out with Lion's Gate, if any? Will the release retain its original full frame video? Will there be an updated "Dragon Box" release that will include the first movie? You know, questions like that.

Once all that's done, then maybe we can get an update on the One Piece situation.

At any rate, Funimation will have to answer these questions and more; if not at AX, then eventually. Otherwise, they're going to start getting endless questions from fans about it.

Other than that, while I won't be able to go of course, I'm sure it will be a great AX.

I don't understand the first part. If the Anime Next rep actually didn't know the facts, there is no lie. And there's no incentive to not tell people that FUNimation is releasing the early part of Dragon Ball. So good questions aside, I hope people don't waste a lot of their time with that.

CN was the most receving of the movement than any other network. While SyFy seems to be interested these days--and I would find it pretty cool if they expanded--I think the fanbase simply has more focus on trying to rebuild it's mainstream status. These things need to be of natural progression. Trying to force things the way back to how they were ten years ago won't truly work without both a lot of money and actual influence on either side of the business world. Both we have neither of, unless somebody is up to going to school and then infiltrating their network of choice to slowly build their own political capital and then use it themselves to make their will known to the network.

I recognize I'm being the isolationalist here but we eventually have to enjoy what freedom we have.

Seems FUNi confirmed no cropping for DB and with more news on the way, I'm hoping they got the JUMP Anime Tour special and Kai. Also, it seems Movie Nine of One Piece is not on their current contract...which makes me wonder what is...

Now back to Grease for me...

The reps can be forgiven due to being misinformed but in the future, FUNimation will need to start ramping up the coaching sessions for these reps on what to say and do the next time they go out to random conventions. Fanboys can be a bunch of ungrateful pricks and anything the reps say can be used against the company at future conventions.

I believe their original contract for One Piece included up to episode 206, but it is obvious they have acquired episodes past that now, since Chris Sabat stated that
they are very close to Franky, dub wise.
What I'm still wondering if how FUNi got the DVD rights for the first 2 Seasons so quickly, when VIZ had them? I guess Toei had the power to take those rights away and give them to FUNi, but then again they didn't do that for the first 2 Seasons of DBZ or the first 13 episodes of DB.

-Cool for anyone who likes Slayers. I know I hate it when anime I like is recast.

-We all knew that.

-Sengoku Basara? Interesting that both of their new anime are based on video games. I haven't seen it, but it looks interesting, and I might check it out.

FUNimation of course has the most announcements, but none of them really matter to me other than Dragon Ball, which we already knew anyway. Oh well. Good for some people.

Not CPM! You gave us such great henta..iiii...I mean, obscure series that were hard to find! Yeah, that's what I meant!

I did love Descendants of Darkness though.

FUNimation's latest enterprise:

http://www.shodojo.com/

"1000s of episodes, 1000s of frienRAB, waiting for you."

Hmm. I'm guessing there will be more information about this at their industry panel. It hasn't launched just yet, so I'm not sure what to make of it. A complement to their online video? Something different? I don't know.

They also got something called SanRAB of Destruction (aka World Destruction) based on an upcoming fantasy RPG from Sega. We'll see how it is, though as far as Sega stuff goes I'm hoping for Valkyria Chronicles. This news probably means that's rather likely, with any luck.

The El Cadazor cast was also announced on Twitter:

Ellis – Maxey Whitehead
Nadie – Trina Nishimura
Blue-Eyes (AKA Jody Hayward) – Clarine Harp
Douglas Rosenberg – Ian Sinclair
Ricardo – Bob Carter
Lirio – Monica Rial
L.A. – Jamie McGonnigal
Dr. Heinz Schneider – Christopher Bevins

I'm thrilled about the old Slayers cast coming back! I wish I had been at the panel when that announcement was made!
I really hope the decision to replace David Moo wasn't made just to pacify the small group of fans who hate him simply because he makes Xellos sound a little goofy. Even so, I'm not too upset about it because Dean Venture is one hell of a replacement!

Oh yeah, I forgot FUNimation is so awesome they'll have video blogs all weekend. Silly me.

Yeah, it's sad that they're gone, but at least they got a last word in.

I look forward to hearing what that site is all about.

I haven't seen SanRAB of Destruction, but I might check it out.

I haven't seen El Cazador either, but those are some surprisingly small names for some of the leaRAB. Also, it looks like Jamie McGonnigal is doing more at FUNimation.

I know today was the slowest day, and it's not over yet (it's only 5 there), so I look forward to more news.

Though, I don't like Naruto (AT ALL!! Still say TMNT are more NINJA then Naruto), but I rather see Naruto on CN again then CN REAL.
