Android overtakes Symbian as the leading smartphone platform in Q4 2010

If they could get out of their own way, they may be able to do that. But with the way they kept fumbling the ball so badly with Maemo, what makes you think they could pull off anything with Meego?

Alien Dalvik is gonna be out, meaning we get access to pretty much all Android apps with a MeeGo device. It might not be a huge hit to start, but that's enough to get it more exposure.

Presumably Elop was brought in so that they get out of their own way.

I saw the video demo, and it seems like a cool solution, except I don't see how Google doesn't kill it dead with intellectual property violation lawsuits. Essentially, running Android apps on another mobile platform, is a software hack; Nokia could never make that their official ecosystem. The lawyers would eat them alive.

Actually, the apps belong to their developers/publishers/whateverers and the Dalvik JVM is open source. There is absolutely nothing to stop a potential app developer from simply selling his Android app in another market.

The idea is not to grant MeeGo devices access to the Android Market place but to open the Ovi Store to Android developers with basically zero additional work.

Why? If it runs Google apps, its better for Google's bottom line. If Meego runs Android apps, its better for Google's bottom line --- please note free Android apps often come with AdMob banner advertising. But then again, you already got Symbian apps with AdMob advertising.

However, you can't put the Android Market on it, since you have to join Open Handset Alliance first, then subject the device to Google's suite of compatibility tests before its certified to have the Android Market on it. There is also a whole bunch of hardware requirements you have to meet.

Meego with Dalvik VM can only acquire Android apps that are directly downloadable from websites, like for example, Twitter for Android. Or from websites like GetJar or the upcoming Amazon app store. Or add the Android Market APK yourself, like people do on converted Windows Mobile phones or various tablets.

Just to give you an idea how Google makes mobile money:

Mobile AdSense, AdWords apply to the banner ads on mobile webpages. Doesn't matter what phone you use, Google makes money off from it. The ad is on the web, not on the phone.

AdMob. Google's big acquisition. Banner ads on mobile apps. Its the biggest in the industry but you also have some competitors like Smaato and Millenial Media. AdMob covers every platform, including Symbian, Blackberry and IOS.

Yeah, plus they didn't even officially kill Symbian either. Symbian will probably get phased out, but MeeGo's still there pretty clearly as far as long term goals go.

yes Elop pretty much put symbian out to pasture

"With Nokia's planned move to Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, Symbian becomes a franchise platform, leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value. This strategy recognizes the opportunity to retain and transition the installed base of 200 million Symbian owners. Nokia expects to sell approximately 150 million more Symbian devices in the years to come"

they will basically still sell symbian phones to make up on previous investments but don't expect anymore "investments" into symbian before transitioning its customer base to wp7.:lol::lol:

I wounder how many E7's nokia will manage to sell

I think the E7 can sell. But it will be enormously price sensitive.

I tried an LG Quantum. When I opened the keyboard, the WP7 interface won't go into landscape mode. Some apps will go landscape, others won't. Its not a very usable phone with the keyboard pushed out.

At least the E7 has a mature and usable landscape interface. So everything consistently appears in landscape from the homescreen to the apps.
