I have to write a paper analyzing popular culture, but I am having trouble thinking of a topic. Any ideas? Here is the essay prompt.
Essay 4: Pop-Culture Analysis
In this essay you will explore the implicit messages inherent in all pop-culture media. While a movie or TV show can seem to be “just” entertainment, media always highlights certain angles or points of view and ignores others. Also, control over popular media is not democratically distributed. Very few people actually control and decide what the whole country watches and listens to, and these people and corporations can benefit from flooding our world with certain types of images and sounds.
Choose some form of pop-culture media (music, TV show, movie, video game etc.) and do a “close-reading” of all the visual and audio elements.
Then write a 4-6 page essay analyzing the implicit messages and consequences of your media piece.
You will want to:
•Introduce your media piece and its context
•State your thesis clearly
•Show with specific examples what you think the implicit messages of your media piece is
•Answer the “so what,” question and tell us why this is important. Does your piece have any consequences or effects on certain members of society? Is the reality that the media piece creates a useful model, or does it limit us as a culture? Is your media piece creative expression or just a way to sell more products?
