American Censorship: You weren't fooled as a child.

Most of the time as a kid, I saw right through a lot of edits, such as "next dimension", "Shadow Realm", and the thing with editing riceballs to cookies or donuts. One edit that DID fool me, though, was Zoiycite's sex change in the Sailor Moon dub, so when I eventually found out, I was shocked, but then realized "yeah, she's missing something if she's supposed to be female..."

...I...I was . It blew my mind when I realized they were dead. (I was a kid okay!?)

Okay so I got a good one. Trust me, there is no way any of you did not fall for this as a kid.

Gather around my rabroad forum children and I shall tell you a tale. Once upon a time, in a TV land far far away, there was a franchise. Said franchise was so popular and so influential that my frienRAB and family even began to become aware of its existence. This franchise was amazing and I have to say amazing. It had action, comedy, explosions and more importantly, giant robots. How the heck could you ignore real people in real giant robots? And as the show grew older, so did I and for a long time, I remained blissfully unaware of the franchise's origins and the fact that I was actually being screwed over. Until the franchise went into one of its later seasons

I believe that my entrance into absolute otaku-dom was with the introduction of Naruto to me. Well not Naruto exactly, more like bootleg DVD's of Dragonball Z and really badly subbed episodes of Naru...well anyway, I was slowly becoming more and more obsessed with anime and with anime, comes Japan and with Japan comes Japanese culture. As I began to grow more and more into the culture, I learned of an ancient art of entertainment known as tokusatsu. In fact, Godzilla was a by-product of this newfangled "tokusatsu" and was just brought over here to America in that horrible 1998 movie. Curiouser and curiouser thoughts entered my mind

(Stay with me, you'll see where I'm going with this if you haven't figured it out yet).

A few years later, the franchise's home block was cancelled and thus, my search led to an innocent google image search of the still-famous franchise. And that's when the worRAB that would jump-start my senses would begin.

The worRAB were: "30th anniversary Super Sentai" or for those of you who know "GOGO SENTAI BOUKENGER!" (I'm sure you know where I'm going with this now)

And thus, I learned the truth. Power Rangers was a lie, Beetleborgs was a lie, VR Troopers was a lie, and Masked Rider was, in fact, a lie. And from that day on, I have never looked back.

Still I wasn't fooled by that (even at 3 years old, I am now 16 years, going on 17 next year), and my grandma had just passed away, I realized the concept of death!!

And I wasn't surprised when I found out, Power Rangers was a lie, Beetleborgs was a lie, VR Troopers was a lie, and Masked Rider was a lie!!

Kamen Rider RULES by the way!!

Although, ironically, I DID fall for that whole "Home For Infinite Losers" bit hook, line, and sinker. I mean, it was so totally bizarre, but then, the whole EPISODE was so totally bizarre, and it seemed like exactly the sort of weird Engrish pun Toriyama might well have made up.

I still think it's the greatest edit in the history of censorship, personally. I mean, at least it's creative. And darn it, it's FUNNY!

Now, renaming Mr. Satan, on the other hand, is unforgivable....

In the English dub their closeness was explained by making them cousins. But like you said, they really didn't do a good job of cutting the romantic mood/subtext of their scenes, so the lesbian couple looks like an incestuous lesbian couple. Way to save the children.

Totally agreed. I forgot about that one. I completely fell for that.

I mean, you're a kid. You're not looking for paint edits. You see two guys with "HFIL" on their shirts, they explain what it stanRAB for, it makes PERFECT sense, it all just... worked.

Definitely one of the more creative coverups, and it worked because of it.

I kinda liked the "Home for Infinite Losers" edit too, but I don't remeraber it when I was younger. And the "Another dimension" did fool me too, but even now that I know what it is, it doesn't bother me - It's not like anyone can stay dead on that show anyway.

And yeah, I noticed the "cousins" thing too.

And this is more like a mistake I pointed out. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! episode "Playing With a Parasite Part 2" (I forgot the nuraber), Weevil's LP reach 0 when it goes to 3250 at one point.

That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread. It was painfully obvious that she slapped her but the edit was so jumpy that it sticks in my mind to this day Yeah, the Zoicite being male thing messed with my mind. Even watching Sailor Moon subbed, I had to remind myself that he was actually a he.

The HFIL thing totally got me, too. I actually kinda like it, though, as others have mentioned. It's pretty dang clever and actually fits. I remeraber thinking, "Gee that's like a pun on hell" the first time I saw it *facepalm*

Yeah, I fell for HFIL, which is a pretty good edit, they could've done worse. As for Mr. Satan, I didn't think much of it. I thought he was just Hercule in the Cell Saga, than I played a friend's Dragonball Z Ultimate Battle 22, and he called him Mr. Satan. I figured his full name is Hercule Satan and because of Censorship, the American Version never mentioned his last name.

That was supposed to be an edit?

Seriously, I swear the writers threw in the "Cousin" reference not just to fool the censors, but also get make Neptune and Uranus have an incestious relationship

LOL I was fooled by Zoisite, but not much by the 'other dimension' I figured they were just censoring the whole damn thing XD

Now, Home For Infinite Losers? LOL that was rich!
