Alright, this is fucking ridiculous v. BP and it's financial responsibility

How can Washington even do this? Isn't BP a British company? What power does Washington have over a foreign company?

Initiate inspections of the rigs to make sure they are compliant with the laws but don't shut them down putting thousands of people out of work because of a mistake by one company on one platform.

After they overran the fuck out of it and switched from heavy mud to seawater on a site they were advised by some of the best in the business that they should stop drilling....while people around them said it was kicking too much.

The pushed forward and tried to shut it down.

Too late. The other rigs are running. The problem isn't that the other rigs have done something wrong or have similar warning signs. The problem is that there is no contingency plan for them if such warning signs do pop up.

What do you do with 2 events like this happening simultaneously?
That's why they're being overcautious here.

at this point I don't have much faith in anyone doing the right thing or following procedure correctly and regardless BP has been reported denying claims.

And you suddenly care? Where was that angst of concern when Wall Street was the direct cause of the elimination of millions of US jobs? (Financial meltdown, outsourcing, earnings per share padding...)

Seen the news lately?

show where anyone has said get off oil NOW??? no one has said that.

bp had arguments with the drilling staff WHILE they were drilling about how to proceed. Considering they corners they cut and assuming they weren't the only ones and seeing just how bad bad has gotten with the exploded rig..you don't think its prudent to at least stop SOME rigs and thoroughly check them out?

As opposed to that tax money being used in the first place instead.

Do you ever think before you post?

Yeah, BP fucked up in this case. Why should others be punished for it? Are they using the same procedures? There is more chance of having two of these simultaneously by ordering 33 other to be shut down than if they were allowed to continue with intense government inspection to be sure it's safe and that procedures are being followed.

The US government certainly wasn't going to pay for it and as employees of BP it is BP's responsibility to make sure they are properly trained for the job.

I think Van Jones said it. Wasn't he the one with the band aid comment?

assuming....

Rigs can be inspected without shutting down all operations.

Soon to be the largest oil based mistake in history.
One which has basically destroyed a region.

Yes, caution about other rigs is important. The laws won't help here. That's not why they were shut down. It's that there still is no contingency plan (as is evidenced by BP not having corrected this) if a mistake happens by another company. There's nothing.

There was no evidence that we knew of in March that this mistake would happen. It did, there was no back-up plan, there was no clean-up plan, there still is no solution 50+ days after it happened.

The problem isn't that the rigs aren't in compliance with law, the problem is that if there's an accident (unforeseeable) or another mistake...then we have 2 items gushing with no solution.
