Alright, this is fucking ridiculous v. BP and it's financial responsibility

yes we can but it takes time, decades to transition. Not everyone can just jump up and buy a new car using a new technology that jacks up the price.

I'll believe that people haven't been provided with gear, but I highly doubt that they were threatened of being fired if they were seen using safety equipment.

you have to be hazwoper certified before they let you clean anything up. so if theyre getting sick from exposing themselves to oil,

a) they're either being retarded and not using their gear like they should be (frequent problem for people who expose themselves to hazmat, ie fire fighters)

b) aren't being provided with the approriate gear, in which case every one of them can sue and make bank.

edit: if they use gear properly and were trained to hazwoper like I know they are, then there's no reason for widespread sickness. however there are some that just get sick.

BP is being ordered to pay the salaries of the oil workers who have been laid off due to the government ordered halt of drilling on 33 rigs and the moratorium on exploration.

I dont think its rediculous at all....IMO its what they get for not folllowing safety recomendations/guidelines leading up to this disaster.....

Or the other option is that these folks will get unemployment and put the burden...which is already great the way it is on everyones shoulders....

Or option three is to not pay anyone at all and lose your entire workforce to the comptetition, have massive political blowback by the public, and get even tougher sanctions put on you.

Either way BP is going to pay the piper...one way or the other

When BP goes bankrupt and can no longer continue to stop the leak or continue the cleanup process what happens?

think about it again and view the whole picture. i'm sure you will have the lightbulb turn on and you will change your mind.

Got to love conservatives. Wall Street cuts 100,000 jobs in the name of profits and you applaud and blame the newly unemployed if they can't find a job 15 minutes later. But should the oil industry lose jobs because of the already realized potential of their recently proven, horrific safety record, it's "will someone think of the poor workers???"

I am renting a house for a week in the Keys for lobster mini season. I already paid my deposit which is non refundable. If mini season is canceled due to the oil spill and I don't get a refund, you can bet your ass I am going to file a claim against BP for the money I lost.

Not surprising coming from BP.

I think on this issue we have to remember that BP has been quite negligent and that has already immediately ended up in the deaths of 11 people. On top of that the results of their mistake has destroyed an entire natural area.

I'm not vindictive and out to get BP. But in business if you make a series of errors doing what you do...and that in turn ends up harming those around you...you should be held responsible for that. BP should be held responsible for their mistakes and they should be paying people for damage to public property and destruction of their business. Those people are workers and own businesses too. Those businesses pay for licenses to operate in those areas. It's unfair to them to say that they shouldn't get some compensation when one member completely messes up the area they all use for business.

I think this article has been overstated. It's more about the oil service workers who are being put out of business because one company carried out unsafe practices. They shouldn't completely shut down the rigs, but they should be implement temporary measures to ensure extreme caution given the unknowns surrounding what's going on. They should also carefully examine all rigs to check for any problems.

The problem is that it's extremely expensive/day to run a rig. If a company isn't getting as much oil because they have to be overly cautious and someone loses their job...I think BP should be on the hook for compensating them.

This is about responsibility. BP needs to be responsible for their mistakes and let fail if necessary so that mistakes don't happen in the future with other companies. (same as should have been done with GM and Chrysler)

option 1 should be the government not make a knee jerk reaction that eliminates those jobs in the first place.

Especially considering that shutting down the operation of the 33 rigs is actually more dangerous than allowing them to continue pumping and seeing as the blow out we are dealing with now happened during the dangerous process of shutting down the well.

It didn't just lose jobs, they are being eliminated by the government.

Horrific safety record for US offshore drilling?

The government shut down the rigs. The government shut down the rigs. The government shut down the rigs. How is BP responsible for financial problems to other businesses caused by the implementation of US government policy.

and what oh great one is the big picture? Allow a company who negligence is the cause of this disaster get away unscathed...or come up with an amicable agreement with the Gov (which i think BP should demand) to fend off future legal action.

An agreement with the Gov would be in the best interests of BP

What the retards don't get (or aren't willing to admit because they really have a "I don't care if it destroys the economy and brings this country to a halt, we need to get off oil NOW") is that if you stop oil exploration for 6 months, since there are only about 30 of these rigs in the world and cost billions of dollars each, when they are shut down for 6 months (which they won't allow to happen), they will lose billions in contracts.

Instead, they will just say "fuck it" and take their rigs to other waters and take on new oil exploration contracts, often lasting 2 years. So in 6 months, when Obama and the retards come to their senses, it's not like these rigs will just drop what they are doing and return.
